Orange County mixes old river towns, wooded hills, and long rural roads, and storms find all of them.

Orange County runs from the Hudson Highlands and the river towns of Newburgh, New Windsor, and Cornwall west across the Wallkill Valley to Middletown and Goshen, and on to Port Jervis on the Delaware. The south end is hill country: Monroe, Woodbury, Tuxedo, Warwick, and Greenwood Lake, where houses sit on wooded lots along winding roads. Older neighborhoods in Newburgh, Middletown, and the villages have big maples and oaks along the streets, and in the newer subdivisions the woods come right up to the back yard.

The county has taken a run of hard storms. Hurricane Irene in August 2011 flooded rivers and creeks across the county, washed out sections of the Port Jervis rail line, and put Orange County in the federal disaster declaration. Two months later the October 2011 nor'easter dropped wet snow on trees still in leaf. Sandy followed in 2012, and Tropical Storm Isaias in August 2020 left about a third of Orange & Rockland's Orange County customers without power.

Long fall distances are the common thread. A tall oak or tulip poplar at the edge of the woods can reach a house a long way off, and on rural roads one tree can close the only way in. The National Weather Service New York/Upton office covers Orange County.

Field insight:

Orange County calls are spread out, and they vary. In Newburgh or Middletown it's often a street maple split onto a porch and a parked car. Out in Warwick, Monroe, or Chester it's usually a big oak that came out of the tree line onto the roof or across a long driveway, with more damaged trees hanging next to it. We plan for both, and we check what's still standing before anyone works under it.

Our Orange County Emergency Response Process

Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Orange County property safe again.

Our Process

How We Handle Your Tree Emergency

Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency

Step :Emergency Call

Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your Orange County address, what the tree hit, whether lines are down, and which roads in are open.

Step :Dispatch

We don't climb or run cranes in damaging winds. Crews move once winds drop to safe levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.

Step :Safety Assessment

A certified arborist checks the break, root-plate lift in wet soil, hung limbs, damaged trees still standing nearby, and any line contact before work starts.

Step :Controlled Removal

Trees come off houses, cars, and outbuildings in rigged sections, lowered under control instead of cut where they lie.

Step :Property Protection

Mats, spotters, and controlled lowering protect roofs, stone walls, fences, driveways, lawns, and septic areas.

Step :Complete Cleanup

We chip, buck, and haul away the debris, or cut and stack the wood on site if you'd like to keep it.

Step :Insurance Documentation

We photograph and measure the damage before and during removal and send the file to you and your adjuster.

Common Tree Challenges in Orange County

Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.

Northern Red & White Oak

The big trees of Orange County's wooded lots; heavy limbs fail in wet snow, and whole trees tip over in saturated soil

Sugar & Red Maple

Common along village streets and in yards; decay and weak unions let big limbs split onto roofs, cars, and lines

Tulip Poplar

Very tall and fast-growing; brittle tops break out in high wind and can land far from the trunk

White Ash

Emerald ash borer has killed many ash trees across the Hudson Valley; dead ash becomes brittle and breaks unpredictably

Eastern White Pine & Hemlock

Common in the Highlands and on wooded lots; tall, dense crowns catch wind and snow, and hemlock woolly adelgid has weakened many hemlocks

Orange County Tree Regulations

Orange County doesn't run a residential tree-permit program. Tree rules come from the cities of Newburgh, Middletown, and Port Jervis and from the county's towns and villages, and they vary. Some regulate tree clearing on steep slopes or as part of site plans. Trees in a road right-of-way belong to the city, town, village, county, or state, depending on the road.

Work near state-regulated freshwater wetlands, or along streams like the Wallkill River and Moodna Creek, can involve the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Removing a tree that has already fallen on a house, or that's an immediate hazard, generally goes ahead right away. We'll tell you if anyone needs to be notified.

Frequently Asked Questions: Orange County Tree Emergencies

Who is my power company in Orange County, NY?

It depends on where you live. Orange & Rockland serves much of the county, Central Hudson serves the Newburgh area and other parts of the north end, and NYSEG serves some areas as well. Call whichever utility sends your bill if a tree is on a line. Stay well back and treat the line as live. We remove the tree once the utility has made it safe.

Do you cover all of Orange County?

Yes. We work from Newburgh, New Windsor, and Cornwall to Middletown, Goshen, Chester, Montgomery, and Walden, and through Monroe, Woodbury, Warwick, Greenwood Lake, Tuxedo, and Port Jervis. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour.

A tree is blocking my only driveway on a rural road. Can you clear it?

Yes. We clear a way in and out first, then deal with the rest of the tree. If wires are tangled in it, the utility has to make the line safe before we cut. If the tree is across a public road, the town or county highway department handles the roadway.

Do I need a permit to remove a storm-damaged tree in Orange County?

Orange County doesn't issue residential tree permits. Your city, town, or village may have its own rules, mainly for steep slopes or development. A tree that has already fallen on your house or is an immediate hazard can generally be removed right away. We'll help you figure out who to notify.

Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal in Orange County?

Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies respond when a tree damages an insured structure like a house, garage, or fence, and treat a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything differently. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes to support your claim.

Should I worry about trees that are still standing after a storm?

Often, yes. In Orange County's wooded neighborhoods, one tree falling usually means its neighbors took the same wind and may have cracked limbs, hung branches, or lifted roots. We look at the trees around the one that came down and tell you which ones are a real risk.
