Ocean Springs is known for its live oaks, and they need care when a storm comes through.
Few towns on the Gulf Coast are as closely tied to their trees as Ocean Springs. Live oaks arch over Government Street, Washington Avenue, and the streets running down to Front Beach and East Beach, and the city protects them through its tree rules and Tree Protection Committee. Around those old oaks are laurel and water oaks, magnolias, and tall pines on cottage lots and in the bayou neighborhoods of Gulf Hills and Fort Bayou, many of them leaning over roofs, porches, and lines.
The town sits on the east side of Biloxi Bay, directly exposed to the Gulf. Hurricane Katrina came ashore on August 29, 2005 with a storm surge that destroyed buildings along the Ocean Springs shoreline and took out the U.S. 90 Biloxi Bay Bridge to Biloxi. Hurricane Camille in 1969 and Hurricane Zeta in October 2020 brought trees down across the coast, and slow-moving tropical rain and summer storms flood the low streets near the bayous.
Saturated ground is what turns a strong tree into a fallen one. Ocean Springs' sandy soils hold little once they're soaked, and salt water from surge can damage roots and leave trees declining for months after the storm. The National Weather Service New Orleans/Baton Rouge office covers Jackson County, and tornadoes in tropical rain bands are a real hazard here too.
Field insight:
In Ocean Springs, the big trees over the house are usually old live oaks, and the goal is to save the tree whenever we can. That means removing the broken limb cleanly at a proper cut and rigging it down in sections, not taking the whole oak because one limb failed. Laurel and water oaks are another story: they're often hollow by middle age, and a split one over a roof usually has to come down. In the older parts of town, we plan around cottages, porches, and fences set close to the trunk.

Common Tree Emergencies We Handle in Ocean Springs
Facing one of these right now? Go straight to the situation — we respond 24/7:
Our Ocean Springs Emergency Response Process
Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Ocean Springs property safe again.
How We Handle Your Tree Emergency
Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency
Step :Emergency Call
Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your Ocean Springs address, what the tree hit, whether anyone is trapped or a line is down, and which roads in are open.
Step :Dispatch
We don't climb or run cranes in tropical-storm-force winds. Crews move once winds drop to safe working levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.
Step :Safety Assessment
A certified arborist checks the break, root-plate lift in wet sandy soil, hung limbs, line contact, and whether a damaged live oak can be kept with proper pruning.
Step :Controlled Removal
Heavy oak limbs come off the roof in rigged sections, lowered under control instead of cut where they lie, so the house doesn't take a second hit.
Step :Property Protection
Mats, spotters, and controlled lowering protect roofs, porches, fences, and lawns, and the roots of protected live oaks we're keeping on the lot.
Step :Complete Cleanup
We chip, buck, and haul away debris, or cut it to size and stage it at the curb for city storm-debris collection when that's what you prefer.
Step :Insurance Documentation
We photograph and measure the damage before and during removal and send the file to you and your adjuster, which helps when a hurricane or wind deductible applies.
Common Tree Challenges in Ocean Springs
Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.
Southern Live Oak
The signature tree of Ocean Springs and among the most wind-resistant on the coast, but old trees carry long, heavy limbs over houses and streets and can lose them in a direct hit
Laurel Oak
Common in yards and along streets; short-lived, often decayed inside by middle age, and one of the trees most likely to break or fall in a hurricane
Water Oak
Fast-growing with weak wood and internal decay; drops big limbs and uproots in saturated soil near the bayous
Slash & Loblolly Pine
Tall pines snap mid-trunk in high wind; storm-stressed pines also attract bark beetles and can die standing in the months after
Southern Magnolia
Dense evergreen crowns catch a lot of wind; large limbs split and older trees can uproot when the ground is soaked
Ocean Springs Tree Regulations
Ocean Springs protects its trees, with particular attention to live oaks. Removing a protected tree normally goes through the city's tree review process, which includes the Tree Protection Committee, and the city has approved removals of significant oaks when arborists found structural decay or an imminent hazard. Trees in the public right-of-way are the city's responsibility, so report a fallen street tree to the city.
Rules differ outside city limits. In unincorporated Jackson County areas like Gulf Park Estates and St. Martin, county rules apply instead. A tree that has already fallen on a house is an emergency, but healthy protected trees, and especially live oaks, should not be cut without checking with the city first. We can tell you which rules apply to your lot before we cut.

Frequently Asked Questions: Ocean Springs Tree Emergencies
Do I need permission to remove a storm-damaged live oak in Ocean Springs?
Live oaks are protected in Ocean Springs, and removing a protected tree normally needs city approval. A tree or limb that has already fallen on your house is an emergency, and clearing it comes first. For a damaged oak that's still standing, check with the city before removal. In many cases the tree can be kept by removing the broken limbs properly, and we'll give you an honest assessment.
Can you save a live oak that lost a big limb?
Often, yes. Live oaks are tough, and a mature tree that lost one limb can usually be kept with clean pruning cuts at the right places and the removal of any cracked or hanging wood. A tree with a split trunk, a lifted root plate, or extensive decay is different. Our arborist will look at the whole tree and tell you plainly whether it can stay.
Who is my power company in Ocean Springs?
Most of Ocean Springs is served by Mississippi Power. Parts of unincorporated Jackson County are served by Singing River Electric. If a tree is on a line, call whichever utility sends your bill, stay well back, and treat the line as live. We remove the tree once the utility has made it safe.
When can you get to my Ocean Springs property after a hurricane?
Crews can't safely climb or run cranes until the winds drop, so no one should be cutting during the storm itself. After that, we triage: trees on occupied homes, trapped people, and blocked exits come first, then trees on cars and outbuildings, then yard cleanup. Call (866) 320-7003 and we'll tell you honestly where you are in line.
Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal in Ocean Springs?
Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies cover removal when a tree damages an insured structure, and treat a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything differently. Many coastal Mississippi policies carry a separate hurricane or named-storm deductible, and some wind coverage is written through a separate policy. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes to support your claim.
Can I leave storm debris at the curb in Ocean Springs?
After a declared storm, the city usually runs curbside storm-debris pickup with rules about separating vegetation from construction debris and keeping piles off hydrants, meters, and drains. Follow the city's current guidance. We can haul everything away, or cut and stage it at the curb if you want to use the free pickup.
