In Putnam County, the woods start at the back door.
Putnam County is one of the most heavily wooded places in the New York suburbs. The Hudson Highlands rise behind Cold Spring, Nelsonville, and Garrison in Philipstown, and to the east the towns of Putnam Valley, Carmel, Kent, Patterson, and Southeast are a mix of lakes, reservoirs, and hilly roads lined with stone walls. Around Lake Mahopac, Lake Carmel, and Lake Peekskill, houses sit close together on small lots under tall oaks. Elsewhere they sit on wooded acreage at the end of long, steep driveways.
That canopy is what takes the power out. The October 2011 nor'easter loaded leafy trees with wet snow and stranded drivers on Putnam's highways. Sandy brought widespread damage in 2012, and the severe storms of May 15, 2018 brought National Weather Service-confirmed tornadoes to Kent and Patterson, closed well over a hundred roads, and knocked out power to more than 28,000 NYSEG customers in Putnam alone.
Thin soil over rock, wet ground near the lakes and reservoirs, and slopes everywhere make it easy for a big tree to tip over once the soil is soaked. The National Weather Service New York/Upton office covers Putnam County.
Field insight:
Most Putnam calls involve access. A big oak across a steep driveway, a tree on the roof of a lake cottage with no room for equipment on either side, or a whole row of trees down along a stone wall with lines tangled in them. We often spend the first part of the job just reaching the house safely, and then rig the tree off the roof in sections.

Common Tree Emergencies We Handle in Putnam County
Facing one of these right now? Go straight to the situation — we respond 24/7:
Our Putnam County Emergency Response Process
Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Putnam County property safe again.
How We Handle Your Tree Emergency
Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency
Step :Emergency Call
Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your Putnam County address, what the tree hit, whether lines are down, and whether your driveway or road is blocked.
Step :Dispatch
We don't climb or run cranes in damaging winds. Crews move once winds drop to safe levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.
Step :Safety Assessment
A certified arborist checks the break, root-plate lift on the slope, hung limbs, nearby damaged trees, and any line contact before work starts.
Step :Controlled Removal
Trees come off houses, decks, and cars in rigged sections, lowered under control instead of cut where they lie.
Step :Property Protection
Mats, spotters, and controlled lowering protect roofs, stone walls, retaining walls, docks, septic areas, and steep driveways.
Step :Complete Cleanup
We chip, buck, and haul away the debris, or cut and stack the wood on site if you'd like to keep it.
Step :Insurance Documentation
We photograph and measure the damage before and during removal and send the file to you and your adjuster.
Common Tree Challenges in Putnam County
Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.
Northern Red & Chestnut Oak
The dominant trees on Putnam's ridges; heavy limbs fail in wet snow, and shallow roots over rock let whole trees tip in soaked soil
Tulip Poplar
Among the tallest trees in the county; brittle tops snap in high wind and land far from the trunk
Sugar & Red Maple
Common in yards and along roads; decay and tight unions let big limbs split onto roofs and lines
White Ash
Emerald ash borer has killed many ash trees in the region; dead ash becomes brittle and breaks without warning
Eastern Hemlock
Common in shaded ravines and along streams; hemlock woolly adelgid has weakened and killed many, leaving trees that fail in storms
Putnam County Tree Regulations
Putnam County doesn't run a residential tree-permit program. Tree rules come from the six towns (Carmel, Kent, Patterson, Philipstown, Putnam Valley, and Southeast) and the villages of Brewster, Cold Spring, and Nelsonville, and some regulate clearing on steep slopes, near wetlands, or as part of site plans. Trees along town, county, and state roads belong to whoever owns the road.
Much of eastern Putnam drains to New York City's reservoirs, and the city's watershed rules and state-regulated freshwater wetlands can come into play for work near reservoirs, lakes, and streams. Removing a tree that has already fallen on a house, or that's an immediate hazard, generally goes ahead right away. We'll tell you if anyone needs to be notified.

Frequently Asked Questions: Putnam County Tree Emergencies
Who is my power company in Putnam County?
Most of Putnam County is served by NYSEG. Central Hudson serves Philipstown, including Cold Spring and Garrison, and some other parts of the county. If a tree is on a line, call whichever utility sends your bill: NYSEG at 800-572-1131 or Central Hudson at 800-527-2714. Stay well back and treat the line as live. We remove the tree once the utility has made it safe.
Can you reach a house at the end of a long, steep driveway with a tree across it?
Yes. We clear a safe way in first, working from the road toward the house, and then deal with whatever is on the house. If lines are tangled in the trees, the utility has to make them safe before we cut.
Do you work around the lakes, like Lake Mahopac and Lake Carmel?
Yes. Lake communities often have small lots, close neighbors, and no room to drop a tree, so we take trees down in short rigged sections and lower them into whatever space there is. We also protect docks, retaining walls, and septic areas near the water.
Do I need a permit to remove a storm-damaged tree in Putnam County?
The county doesn't issue residential tree permits, but your town or village may have rules for steep slopes, wetlands, or work near the reservoirs. A tree that has already fallen on your house or is an immediate hazard can generally be removed right away. We'll help you figure out who to notify.
Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal in Putnam County?
Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies respond when a tree damages an insured structure like a house, garage, or fence, and treat a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything differently. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes to support your claim.
Which parts of Putnam County do you cover?
All of it: Carmel and Mahopac, Kent, Patterson, Southeast and Brewster, Putnam Valley, and Philipstown, including Cold Spring, Nelsonville, and Garrison. We also work just over the line in northern Westchester. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour.
