Dutchess County's old trees line its river towns, estates, and country roads.
Dutchess County stretches from the Hudson to the Connecticut line. Along the river, the City of Poughkeepsie, Beacon, Wappingers Falls, Hyde Park, Rhinebeck, and Red Hook have older neighborhoods and historic estates with big maples, oaks, and beeches, many of them a century old. The middle of the county, around Fishkill, East Fishkill, LaGrange, Pleasant Valley, and Millbrook, is newer subdivisions cut into wooded hills, and the east, from Pawling and Dover up to Amenia and Millerton, is farm and forest country with long tree-lined roads.
Storms here are often about wind and wet snow. Hurricane Irene in August 2011 flooded roads and brought down so many trees that Central Hudson reported more than 115,000 customers out in Dutchess and Ulster counties, with Hyde Park, Pleasant Valley, Union Vale, Poughkeepsie, and Dover among the hardest hit. Two months later the October 2011 nor'easter dropped more than 20 inches of wet snow around Millbrook on trees still in leaf. On May 15, 2018, the National Weather Service confirmed a macroburst with winds estimated near 105 mph along the I-84 corridor between Beacon, Wappingers Falls, and East Fishkill that toppled hundreds of trees.
Summer thunderstorms add to the list; a July 2026 storm hit Beekman and Pawling especially hard. The National Weather Service Albany office covers Dutchess County.
Field insight:
Dutchess calls are spread over a big county. In Poughkeepsie and Beacon it's often a street maple split onto a porch or a car on a tight city lot. In the subdivisions around Fishkill and LaGrange it's an oak from the tree line on a roof. Out east it's usually several trees across a long driveway or a country road, with lines down and more damaged trees still standing. We plan each one differently.

Common Tree Emergencies We Handle in Dutchess County
Facing one of these right now? Go straight to the situation — we respond 24/7:
Our Dutchess County Emergency Response Process
Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Dutchess County property safe again.
How We Handle Your Tree Emergency
Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency
Step :Emergency Call
Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your Dutchess County address, what the tree hit, whether lines are down, and which roads in are open.
Step :Dispatch
We don't climb or run cranes in damaging winds. Crews move once winds drop to safe levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.
Step :Safety Assessment
A certified arborist checks the break, root-plate lift in wet soil, hung limbs, damaged trees still standing nearby, and any line contact before work starts.
Step :Controlled Removal
Trees come off houses, cars, and barns in rigged sections, lowered under control instead of cut where they lie.
Step :Property Protection
Mats, spotters, and controlled lowering protect roofs, slate and historic trim, stone walls, fences, driveways, and septic areas.
Step :Complete Cleanup
We chip, buck, and haul away the debris, or cut and stack the wood on site if you'd like to keep it.
Step :Insurance Documentation
We photograph and measure the damage before and during removal and send the file to you and your adjuster.
Common Tree Challenges in Dutchess County
Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.
Sugar & Norway Maple
Old street and yard trees in Poughkeepsie, Beacon, and the river villages; decay and weak unions let big limbs split onto roofs, cars, and lines
Northern Red & White Oak
The big trees of Dutchess's wooded lots; heavy limbs fail in wet snow, and whole trees tip over in saturated soil
White Ash
Emerald ash borer has killed many ash trees across the Hudson Valley; dead ash becomes brittle and breaks unpredictably
Eastern White Pine
Tall windbreak and yard trees; dense crowns catch wind and wet snow and can snap or uproot
American Beech
Found on older estates and in woodlots; beech leaf disease is spreading in the Hudson Valley and weakens trees over time
Dutchess County Tree Regulations
Dutchess County doesn't run a residential tree-permit program. Tree rules come from the cities of Poughkeepsie and Beacon and from the county's towns and villages, and some regulate clearing on steep slopes, along ridgelines, or as part of site plans. Local historic districts can add review for work near historic structures. Trees in a road right-of-way belong to whoever owns the road.
Work near state-regulated freshwater wetlands or along streams can involve the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Removing a tree that has already fallen on a house, or that's an immediate hazard, generally goes ahead right away. We'll tell you if anyone needs to be notified.

Frequently Asked Questions: Dutchess County Tree Emergencies
Who is my power company in Dutchess County?
Most of Dutchess County is served by Central Hudson. Parts of eastern Dutchess, including much of Pawling, Dover, and Beekman, are served by NYSEG. If a tree is on a line, call whichever utility sends your bill, stay well back, and treat the line as live. We remove the tree once the utility has made it safe.
Do you cover all of Dutchess County?
Yes. We work in Poughkeepsie, Beacon, Wappingers Falls, Fishkill, East Fishkill, LaGrange, and Pleasant Valley, north through Hyde Park, Rhinebeck, and Red Hook, and east through Millbrook, Beekman, Pawling, Dover, Amenia, and Millerton. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour.
Can you remove a big old tree from a historic house without damaging it?
Yes. On older homes with slate roofs and original trim, we never cut a tree where it lies. We rig it and lower it off in small sections, protect the roof and porch as we go, and document the damage for your insurer before anything moves.
Do I need a permit to remove a storm-damaged tree in Dutchess County?
The county doesn't issue residential tree permits, but your city, town, or village may have rules for steep slopes, ridgelines, or historic districts. A tree that has already fallen on your house or is an immediate hazard can generally be removed right away. We'll help you figure out who to notify.
Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal in Dutchess County?
Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies respond when a tree damages an insured structure like a house, garage, or barn, and treat a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything differently. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes to support your claim.
Why does wet snow bring down so many trees in Dutchess County?
Early and late snowstorms, like the October 2011 nor'easter, hit while trees still have leaves. The leaves hold heavy wet snow, and limbs and whole trees break under the weight. Older maples and oaks with decay or weak unions go first.
