South Mississippi gets hurricanes from the Gulf and tornadoes from the west.

The Mississippi coast has taken some of the strongest hurricanes in U.S. history. Camille struck in August 1969, and Katrina came ashore on August 29, 2005 with a storm surge that devastated the waterfront from Waveland to Pascagoula and winds that downed trees as far inland as Hattiesburg. Hurricane Zeta crossed the coast in October 2020. Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30.

Inland, the Pine Belt deals with tornadoes as often as tropical storms. Hattiesburg was hit by an EF4 tornado in February 2013 and an EF3 in January 2017, and the April 2020 Easter outbreak sent a long-track EF4 through Jefferson Davis, Covington, and Jones counties. Tall loblolly and longleaf pines over houses, and decay-prone laurel and water oaks in older neighborhoods, are what come down.

We serve South Mississippi: the Gulf Coast in Harrison and Jackson counties, including Gulfport, Biloxi, and Ocean Springs, and the Pine Belt around Hattiesburg in Forrest and Lamar counties.

Field insight:

After a South Mississippi storm, the damage is usually wind plus soaked ground. Saturated soil lets oaks and pines tip over at wind speeds they'd survive in dry weather, and pines that cracked but stayed standing can fail days later. We assess the standing trees around a job before anyone works under them, and we rig heavy limbs and trunks down instead of cutting them where they lie. Where a damaged live oak can be saved with proper pruning, we'll tell you.

Our Mississippi Emergency Response Process

Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork.

Our Process

How We Handle Your Tree Emergency

Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency

Step :Emergency Call

Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your address, what the tree hit, whether lines or flooding are involved, and which roads in are open.

Step :Dispatch

We don't climb or run cranes in tropical-storm-force winds. Crews move once winds drop to safe levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.

Step :Safety Assessment

A certified arborist checks the break, root-plate lift in wet ground, damaged trees still standing nearby, and any line contact before work starts.

Step :Controlled Removal

Trees come off houses, cars, and outbuildings in rigged sections, lowered under control instead of cut where they lie.

Step :Property Protection

Mats, spotters, and controlled lowering protect roofs, fences, septic areas, driveways, and lawns, including soft ground after flooding.

Step :Complete Cleanup

We chip, buck, and haul away debris, or cut and stage it at the curb for city or county storm-debris collection if you prefer.

Step :Insurance Documentation

We photograph and measure the damage before and during removal and send the file to you and your adjuster, which helps when a hurricane or wind deductible applies.

Common Tree Challenges in Mississippi

Each species fails differently under stress. Knowing the patterns lets us remove hazards without creating new ones.

Southern Live Oak

Among the most wind-resistant trees on the coast, but old trees carry long, heavy limbs over houses and streets

Laurel Oak

Short-lived and often decayed inside by middle age; one of the most failure-prone trees in a Gulf Coast hurricane

Water Oak

Weak wood and internal decay; sheds big limbs and uproots in saturated soil

Loblolly, Longleaf & Slash Pine

Tall pines snap or uproot in high wind; storm-stressed pines attract bark beetles and can die standing in the months after

Pecan

Old yard pecans are brittle and rank poorly for wind resistance; large limbs fail in storms

Mississippi Tree Regulations

Tree rules in Mississippi are set locally. Several coast cities protect mature trees: Ocean Springs protects its live oaks through a tree review process, and Gulfport requires a permit to remove protected trees such as mature live oaks and magnolias. Hattiesburg has a tree ordinance and a city arborist. Trees in the public right-of-way are the local government's responsibility.

Rules differ between cities and unincorporated county land, so the answer depends on exactly where your property is. A tree that has already fallen on a house is an emergency, and clearing it comes first. For a healthy or damaged protected tree that's still standing, check with the city or county before removal. We'll tell you which rules apply before we cut.

Frequently Asked Questions: Mississippi Tree Emergencies

Which parts of Mississippi do you serve?

We serve South Mississippi: the Gulf Coast in Harrison and Jackson counties, including Gulfport, Biloxi, Long Beach, D'Iberville, Ocean Springs, and Gautier, and the Pine Belt around Hattiesburg and Petal in Forrest and Lamar counties. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour.

Do I need a permit to remove a storm-damaged tree in Mississippi?

There's no statewide permit for residential tree removal, but some cities have their own rules. Ocean Springs protects live oaks, and Gulfport requires a permit for protected trees such as mature live oaks and magnolias. A tree that has already fallen on your house is an emergency, and clearing it comes first. We'll help you check local rules for anything still standing.

Will insurance cover emergency tree removal in Mississippi?

Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies cover removal when a tree damages an insured structure, and treat a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything differently. Many coastal policies carry a separate hurricane or named-storm deductible, and some wind coverage is written through a separate policy. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes to support your claim.

What should I do if a tree is on a power line?

Treat every downed line as live. Stay well back, keep kids and pets away, and don't touch cars, fences, or standing water near the wires. Report it to the utility that sends your bill: Mississippi Power in most of Gulfport, Biloxi, Ocean Springs, and Hattiesburg, or an electric power association such as Coast Electric, Singing River Electric, or Pearl River Valley Electric in many rural areas. Once the line is safe, we remove the tree.

When can you get to my property after a hurricane or tornado?

Crews can't safely climb or run cranes until the winds drop and storms have passed, so no one should be cutting during the storm. After that, we triage: trees on occupied homes, trapped people, and blocked exits come first, then trees on cars and outbuildings, then yard cleanup. We'll tell you honestly where you are in line.
