Ulster County runs from the Hudson into the Catskills, and its houses sit deep in the trees.

Ulster County covers a lot of ground. Kingston, the old Rondout waterfront, Saugerties, and Esopus sit along the Hudson, with older neighborhoods of big maples and oaks over close-set houses. West of the river the county climbs past New Paltz, Rosendale, Stone Ridge, and the Shawangunk Ridge into the Catskills, where Woodstock, Phoenicia, and the towns along the Esopus Creek have homes tucked into steep, wooded hillsides on narrow roads.

Ulster's worst storms have been floods and wet snow. Hurricane Irene in August 2011 brought record flooding on the Upper Esopus, the Stony Clove Creek in Phoenicia, and the Rondout Creek in Rosendale, and the county executive called it the worst natural disaster in the county's history. Downed trees from Irene left more than 115,000 Central Hudson customers without power across Dutchess and Ulster. The October 2011 nor'easter followed two months later with wet snow on trees still in leaf.

Steep slopes, thin soil over rock, and stream banks that get scoured in floods all make it easier for big trees to fail. The National Weather Service Albany office covers Ulster County.

Field insight:

Ulster County calls are often about getting there. A hemlock or oak down across a mountain road outside Woodstock or Phoenicia, a tree on a cabin roof with a steep drop on one side, or a big maple split onto a porch in Kingston's Stockade or Rondout neighborhoods. On the hillsides we plan the rigging around the slope, because a piece that gets loose doesn't stop rolling.

Our Ulster County Emergency Response Process

Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Ulster County property safe again.

Our Process

How We Handle Your Tree Emergency

Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency

Step :Emergency Call

Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your Ulster County address, what the tree hit, whether lines are down, and which roads in are open or flooded.

Step :Dispatch

We don't climb or run cranes in damaging winds. Crews move once winds drop to safe levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.

Step :Safety Assessment

A certified arborist checks the break, root-plate lift on the slope or a scoured bank, hung limbs, nearby damaged trees, and any line contact.

Step :Controlled Removal

Trees come off houses, cabins, and cars in rigged sections, lowered under control instead of cut where they lie.

Step :Property Protection

Mats, spotters, and controlled lowering protect roofs, decks, stone walls, wells, septic areas, and steep driveways.

Step :Complete Cleanup

We chip, buck, and haul away the debris, or cut and stack the wood on site if you'd like to keep it for the stove.

Step :Insurance Documentation

We photograph and measure the damage before and during removal and send the file to you and your adjuster.

Common Tree Challenges in Ulster County

Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.

Northern Red & Chestnut Oak

Common on Ulster's hillsides and the Shawangunk Ridge; heavy limbs fail in wet snow, and roots over rock let whole trees tip in soaked soil

Sugar Maple

Big old yard and street trees in Kingston, Saugerties, and the hamlets; decay and weak unions let large limbs split onto roofs and lines

Eastern Hemlock

Common in Catskills ravines and along streams; hemlock woolly adelgid has weakened and killed many, leaving trees that fail in storms

Eastern White Pine

Tall, top-heavy crowns catch wind and wet snow and can snap or uproot near houses

White Ash

Emerald ash borer has killed many ash trees in the Hudson Valley and Catskills; dead ash becomes brittle and breaks unpredictably

Ulster County Tree Regulations

Ulster County doesn't run a residential tree-permit program. Tree rules come from the City of Kingston and the county's towns and villages, and some regulate clearing on steep slopes, along ridgelines, or as part of site plans. Kingston's historic districts can add review for work near historic structures. Trees in a road right-of-way belong to whoever owns the road.

Much of western Ulster is inside the Catskill Park and the New York City watershed that feeds the Ashokan Reservoir, and work near streams, state-regulated freshwater wetlands, or on state Forest Preserve land has its own rules. Removing a tree that has already fallen on a house, or that's an immediate hazard, generally goes ahead right away. We'll tell you if anyone needs to be notified.

Frequently Asked Questions: Ulster County Tree Emergencies

Who is my power company in Ulster County?

Most of Ulster County, including Kingston, New Paltz, Saugerties, and Ellenville, is served by Central Hudson. NYSEG serves some areas of the county as well. If a tree is on a line, call whichever utility sends your bill, stay well back, and treat the line as live. We remove the tree once the utility has made it safe.

Do you cover the Catskills side of the county, like Woodstock and Phoenicia?

Yes. We work across the whole county, from Kingston, Saugerties, and Esopus on the river to New Paltz, Rosendale, Stone Ridge, and Ellenville, and up into Woodstock, Phoenicia, and the towns along the Esopus Creek. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour.

A tree is down across my road and my driveway. What happens first?

If lines are tangled in it, the utility has to make them safe before anyone cuts. Trees across a public road are the town, county, or state highway department's to clear. On your property, we open a safe way in to the house first and then deal with whatever is on the house.

Do I need a permit to remove a storm-damaged tree in Ulster County?

The county doesn't issue residential tree permits, but your city, town, or village may have rules for steep slopes, ridgelines, or historic districts, and work near streams or in the watershed can have its own rules. A tree that has already fallen on your house or is an immediate hazard can generally be removed right away. We'll help you figure out who to notify.

Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal in Ulster County?

Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies respond when a tree damages an insured structure like a house, garage, or shed, and treat a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything differently. Flood damage is usually a separate policy. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes to support your claim.

Are trees near creeks more likely to fall after a flood?

Yes. Floods like Irene in 2011 scour the banks of the Esopus, the Rondout, and smaller creeks and wash soil out from under the roots. Trees can stand for a while and then go over in the next storm. If you have big trees on a creek bank near the house, have them looked at after high water.
