Princeton's trees are older than most of its houses, and the town's rules keep them that way.
Princeton has a lot of very old trees in places where people live. The Western Section's estates along Library Place and Hodge Road sit under oaks, beeches, and tulip trees that were big a century ago. Riverside and Littlebrook are later, mid-century neighborhoods built into woodland, with houses tucked between trees that were left standing. Toward the Princeton Ridge and Herrontown Woods on the north side, lots back right up to forest.
The town protects that canopy on purpose. Since the old Borough and Township merged in 2013, Princeton has had a single tree ordinance, written with the Princeton Shade Tree Commission, that requires permits for many tree removals and notice to neighbors. The trees stay, and they keep getting bigger over the roofs.
Tropical Storm Isaias showed what that means on a storm day. On August 4, 2020, Princeton police logged more than 50 trees or limbs down and 22 reports of wires down in about three hours, roads including Herrontown Road and Riverside Drive were blocked, and about 6,600 residents lost power at the peak. PSE&G didn't finish restoring Princeton for close to a week.
Field insight:
In Riverside, Littlebrook, and along the Ridge, a lot of our calls are trees that came out of the woods next to the house rather than a yard tree. A tall tulip poplar or oak that grew up in a stand, with neighbors sheltering it, loses that protection when one of them falls, and then it goes in the next storm. After we clear the tree on the roof, we look at what's left standing behind it.

Common Tree Emergencies We Handle in Princeton
Facing one of these right now? Go straight to the situation — we respond 24/7:
Our Princeton Emergency Response Process
Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Princeton property safe again.
How We Handle Your Tree Emergency
Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency
Step :Emergency Call
Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your Princeton address, what the tree hit, whether the road is blocked, and whether wires are involved.
Step :Dispatch
We don't climb or run cranes in damaging winds. Crews move once gusts drop to safe levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.
Step :Safety Assessment
A certified arborist checks the break, the lean, hung limbs, wire contact, and the trees standing next to the one that failed, since they're often the next problem.
Step :Controlled Removal
The tree comes off the roof in rigged sections or by crane pick, lowered into whatever clear ground the lot has between the house and the woods.
Step :Property Protection
Mats, spotters, and slow lowering protect slate and cedar roofs, stone walls, gardens, and the protected trees still standing on the lot.
Step :Complete Cleanup
We chip, buck, and haul away the debris and clear the driveway and road, or leave the wood stacked where you want it.
Step :Insurance Documentation
We photograph and measure everything and send the file to you and your adjuster, and our arborist notes also support any permit paperwork the municipality asks for afterward.
Common Tree Challenges in Princeton
Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.
Tulip Poplar
Princeton's tallest native tree, common in the wooded neighborhoods; brittle wood and tops that snap out in summer storms
Northern Red Oak
Large shade trees over many older homes; long limbs and whole-tree uprooting once the soil is soaked
American Beech
Old specimens on estate lots and in the woods; beech leaf disease is spreading in central New Jersey and weakens trees over time
White Ash
Emerald ash borer has killed many of Princeton's ash trees; dead ash turns brittle fast and drops limbs or snaps without warning
Pin Oak
Common street and yard tree; dense crowns catch wind and wet snow, and dead lower limbs fall
Princeton Tree Regulations
Princeton's tree ordinance requires a permit for many tree removals on private property, with notice to neighboring owners, and is enforced by a certified arborist appointed by the municipality in consultation with the Shade Tree Commission. A tree that is already down or is an immediate danger to people or a building is handled differently from a planned removal. We make the property safe, document why the work couldn't wait, and help you with whatever the municipality needs afterward.
Street trees are the municipality's. New Jersey also requires tree care companies to be licensed through the NJ Board of Tree Experts and to work under a Licensed Tree Expert or Licensed Tree Care Operator. Princeton has its own contractor rules on top of that, so ask any crew for their license number before they start.

Frequently Asked Questions: Princeton Tree Emergencies
Do I need a permit to remove a storm-damaged tree in Princeton?
A tree that is already down or is an immediate hazard can be made safe right away. Planned removals are different: Princeton's ordinance requires permits for many removals, with neighbor notice. We make the site safe first, then give you the documentation the municipality will ask for.
Why do trees keep falling near my house after one comes down?
In Princeton's wooded neighborhoods, trees grow up in stands and shelter each other. When one falls, the trees around it are suddenly exposed to wind they never had to resist, and they often go in the next storm. We look at the neighbors of any tree we remove and tell you if one is a risk.
Are dead ash trees on my property dangerous?
Yes. Emerald ash borer has killed a large share of the ash in the Princeton area, and dead ash dries out and turns brittle quickly. It drops limbs and can snap at the trunk with little warning, which makes it dangerous to climb. If one is near your house, it's worth dealing with before a storm does.
Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal in Princeton?
Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies respond when a tree damages an insured structure like a house, garage, or fence, and treat a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything differently. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes to support your claim.
What should I do if a tree is on a power line in Princeton?
Treat every downed line as live. Stay well back, keep kids and pets away, and don't touch cars or fences the wires are resting on. Report it to PSE&G. Once the utility has made the line safe, our crew can remove the tree.
Do you cover Lawrence, West Windsor, and nearby towns?
Yes. Along with every Princeton neighborhood, we work in Lawrence Township, West Windsor, Plainsboro, Montgomery, Hopewell Township, and Rocky Hill. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour.
