Flemington is a historic borough set inside a township of woodlots and long driveways.

Flemington Borough is the Hunterdon County seat, a compact grid of nineteenth-century houses, churches, and the old courthouse along Main Street, with mature street trees close over the roofs. Raritan Township surrounds it completely, and that's where most of the area's homes are: subdivisions cut into old farmland and woods, from Copper Hill and the Amwell Valley in the southeast to the higher Hunterdon Plateau to the northwest.

Out in the township, the typical property has trees at the back and sides of the lot, a hedgerow or woodlot behind it, and overhead lines on the road out front. The ground ranges from heavy valley soils that stay wet to thinner soil over shale and rock on the plateau, and both give way in a wet storm.

Hunterdon County gets hit by the same storms as the rest of northern New Jersey, including the October 2011 snowstorm, Irene and Sandy, and Isaias in 2020, and summer thunderstorms here regularly leave thousands of JCP&L customers out at once. JCP&L itself names fallen trees and branches as a leading cause of outages and has run trimming programs in Flemington and Raritan Township for that reason.

Field insight:

In Raritan Township, a lot of our calls involve a tree that came out of the woodlot or hedgerow behind the house rather than one in the yard. Those edge trees grew up leaning toward the open lawn for light, so when they go, they go toward the house. We clear the structure first, then look at the edge of the woods, because one failure usually exposes the trees behind it.

Our Flemington Emergency Response Process

Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Flemington property safe again.

Our Process

How We Handle Your Tree Emergency

Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency

Step :Emergency Call

Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your Flemington or Raritan Township address, what the tree hit, whether the driveway or road is blocked, and whether wires are involved.

Step :Dispatch

We don't climb or run cranes in damaging winds. Crews move once gusts drop to safe levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.

Step :Safety Assessment

A certified arborist checks the break, the lean, hung limbs, wire contact, and the trees left standing at the edge of the woods.

Step :Controlled Removal

The tree comes off the house in rigged sections or by crane pick, lowered into open lawn where the lot allows it.

Step :Property Protection

Mats, spotters, and controlled lowering protect roofs, decks, septic fields, fences, and lawns that can't carry heavy equipment when they're wet.

Step :Complete Cleanup

We chip, buck, and haul away the debris, or cut and stack firewood on the property if you'd like to keep it.

Step :Insurance Documentation

We photograph and measure everything before and during removal and send the file to you and your adjuster, including the arborist's notes on why the tree failed.

Common Tree Challenges in Flemington

Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.

Northern Red Oak

Big trees at the edges of Hunterdon woodlots; heavy limbs and uprooting in wet valley soil

Tulip Poplar

Grows very tall in the woods behind many township homes; brittle tops snap out in thunderstorms

White Ash

Emerald ash borer has killed many of Hunterdon's ash; dead ash turns brittle and snaps or drops limbs with little warning

Sugar Maple

Old farm and street trees in the borough; can hollow at the base while still leafing out normally

Eastern White Pine

Common in windbreaks and screens; catches wind and wet snow and fails whole on open lots

Flemington and Raritan Township Tree Regulations

Flemington Borough and Raritan Township are separate municipalities with their own rules. Trees along borough and township streets are generally the municipality's to handle, and county roads are Hunterdon County's. A tree that is already down, or one that's an immediate hazard to people or a building, can be made safe right away. For planned removals of healthy trees, especially on lots under development or near streams, check with your municipality first.

New Jersey requires tree care companies to be licensed through the NJ Board of Tree Experts and to work under a Licensed Tree Expert or Licensed Tree Care Operator. Ask for that number before work starts, especially when unfamiliar crews show up after a storm.

Helpful links: New Jersey Forest Service (NJDEP), the Borough of Flemington portal, and the ISA arborist resource NJ Board of Tree Experts — verify a licensed operator.

Frequently Asked Questions: Flemington Tree Emergencies

Do you cover Raritan Township as well as Flemington Borough?

Yes. Raritan Township surrounds Flemington, and we treat them as one service area, along with Copper Hill, Flemington Junction, and the Amwell Valley. We also work in Readington, Three Bridges, Whitehouse Station, East Amwell, Ringoes, Delaware Township, and Hillsborough.

Why do trees from the woods behind my house keep falling toward it?

Trees at the edge of a woodlot grow toward the open light over your lawn, so their weight leans toward the house. When the ground is soaked or a storm hits, they go in that direction. Once one falls, the trees behind it lose their shelter. We check the woods edge whenever we remove one.

Are dead ash trees on my property a risk?

Yes. Emerald ash borer has killed a large share of the ash in Hunterdon County. Dead ash dries out and becomes brittle quickly, drops limbs, and can snap at the trunk with little warning, which also makes it dangerous to climb. If one stands within reach of the house, deal with it before a storm does.

Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal in Flemington?

Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies respond when a tree damages an insured structure like a house, garage, barn, or fence, and treat a tree that falls in the yard or woods without hitting anything differently. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes.

What should I do if a tree is on a power line in Raritan Township?

Treat every downed line as live. Stay well back, keep kids and pets away, and don't touch cars or fences the wires are resting on. Report it to JCP&L. Once the utility has made the line safe, our crew can remove the tree.

Can you get equipment to a tree without wrecking my lawn or septic field?

Yes. On wet Hunterdon lawns we lay ground mats, keep heavy equipment off septic fields and soft ground, and carry or winch wood out when a truck can't get close. We'll walk the route with you before we bring anything in.
