On Bernardsville Mountain, the tree that fell is usually across a long private drive.
Bernardsville is the high ground of the Somerset Hills. Mine Mountain, at about 860 feet, is the area's high point, and Bernardsville Mountain is where New York families built country estates in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Many of those properties have since been divided, but the pattern held: large houses set well back on wooded acreage, reached by long driveways under mature oak, tulip poplar, and beech. Down the hill, around Olcott Square and the train station, the lots are smaller and the trees line the streets instead.
That layout makes storms a different problem here. Wind hits the ridge harder than the valleys around it, and a single tree down across a quarter-mile driveway can cut a house off from the road. Overhead lines run through the woods on many of these streets, and when JCP&L has reviewed outages in the Somerset Hills, tree contact has come out as the leading cause.
The area has been hit hard more than once. The October 2011 snowstorm brought down trees still in leaf across Somerset and Morris counties, Irene and Sandy followed, and after Tropical Storm Isaias in August 2020 Bernardsville had some of the longest-lasting outages in Somerset County.
Field insight:
On the mountain, the first job is often just opening the driveway. A homeowner can be safe inside with a tree on the garage but still have no way for an ambulance or a fuel truck to reach the house. We cut a lane first, then deal with the tree on the structure. On steep, wooded lots we also check the trees that were standing next to the one that fell, because a gap in the canopy exposes the rest to wind.

Somerset Hills response: driveway opened first, then the tree rigged off the garage roof

Common Tree Emergencies We Handle in Bernardsville
Facing one of these right now? Go straight to the situation — we respond 24/7:
Our Bernardsville Emergency Response Process
Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Bernardsville property safe again.
How We Handle Your Tree Emergency
Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency
Step :Emergency Call
Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your Bernardsville address, what the tree hit, whether your driveway or road is blocked, and whether wires are involved.
Step :Dispatch
We don't climb or run cranes in damaging winds. Crews move once gusts drop to safe levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.
Step :Safety Assessment
A certified arborist checks the break, the lean, hung limbs, wire contact, the slope, and the trees around the failure that may now be exposed.
Step :Controlled Removal
We open access first, then take the tree off the house in rigged sections or by crane where the drive and the grade allow it.
Step :Property Protection
Mats, spotters, and controlled lowering protect roofs, stone walls, paddock fencing, gardens, and long gravel or paved drives.
Step :Complete Cleanup
We chip, buck, and haul away the debris, or cut and stack firewood on the property if you'd like to keep it.
Step :Insurance Documentation
We photograph and measure everything and send the file to you and your adjuster, which matters on larger properties where several structures, fences, or drives were damaged.
Common Tree Challenges in Bernardsville
Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.
Northern Red Oak
The dominant big tree on the mountain; heavy limbs over houses and drives, and uprooting on thin, rocky ridge soil when it's soaked
Tulip Poplar
Grows very tall in the wooded lots; brittle tops snap out in thunderstorms and fall across driveways and lines
American Beech
Old estate and woodland trees; beech leaf disease has spread through northern and central New Jersey and weakens them over time
White Ash
Emerald ash borer has killed many ash in the Somerset Hills; dead ash turns brittle and snaps or drops limbs without warning
Eastern White Pine
Planted as screens on estate properties; catches wind and wet snow and fails whole on exposed slopes
Bernardsville Tree Regulations
Trees along borough streets are the Borough of Bernardsville's to handle, and some planned removals on private land can need borough review, so check before cutting a healthy tree. A tree that has already fallen, or one that is an immediate hazard to people or a building, is a different matter from a planned removal. We make the property safe first, document why the work couldn't wait, and tell you if the borough needs to be involved.
New Jersey requires tree care companies to be licensed through the NJ Board of Tree Experts and to work under a Licensed Tree Expert or Licensed Tree Care Operator. Ask for that number before work starts, especially when crews you don't know show up after a big storm.

Frequently Asked Questions: Bernardsville Tree Emergencies
A tree is blocking my driveway on Bernardsville Mountain. Can you open it first?
Yes. If a tree is across your only way in or out, we open a lane before anything else so emergency vehicles can reach the house. Then we deal with any tree on the house, garage, or other buildings.
Why do the Somerset Hills lose power so often in storms?
Many lines here run through wooded properties, and the ridge takes stronger wind than the valleys. When JCP&L has looked at outages in the Somerset Hills, tree contact has been the leading cause. A lot of those trees stand on private land outside the utility's trimmed corridor.
Can you remove a large tree on a steep or wooded lot?
Yes. On slopes we rig sections down under control instead of dropping them, since cut wood rolls downhill, and we set the crane where the drive and the grade can carry it. We also look at the trees around the one that failed.
Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal in Bernardsville?
Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies respond when a tree damages an insured structure like a house, garage, barn, or fence, and treat a tree that falls in the woods or across the drive without hitting anything differently. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes.
What should I do if a tree is on a power line in Bernardsville?
Treat every downed line as live. Stay well back, keep kids, pets, and horses away, and don't touch cars or fences the wires are resting on. Report it to JCP&L. Once the utility has made the line safe, our crew can remove the tree.
Do you cover Basking Ridge, Far Hills, and the rest of the Somerset Hills?
Yes. Along with Bernardsville, we work in Basking Ridge and Bernards Township, Far Hills, Peapack-Gladstone, Bedminster, Liberty Corner, Mendham, and Harding. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour.
