Okaloosa County took the eye of Hurricane Isaias, from the beach to Crestview.

Okaloosa County runs from the Gulf beaches at Destin and Okaloosa Island north across Choctawhatchee Bay and the Eglin reservation to Crestview, Baker, and the Alabama line. The south end is dense: Fort Walton Beach, Mary Esther, Shalimar, Cinco Bayou, Niceville, Valparaiso, and Bluewater Bay, with laurel oaks, live oaks, and pines over houses built close together. North of Eglin, around Crestview, Baker, Holt, and Laurel Hill, homes sit on larger lots surrounded by pine stands and hardwood creek bottoms.

Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Destin on October 9, 2026, as a Category 2 hurricane. Okaloosa County reported more than 500 road hazards from downed trees, power lines, and dark traffic signals, tens of thousands of homes lost power, and Fort Walton Beach saw two to three feet of flooding. Trees came through roofs as far inland as Crestview. The county has been here before: Hurricane Opal came ashore at Pensacola Beach in October 1995 and destroyed stretches of U.S. 98 between Fort Walton Beach and Destin, two months after Hurricane Erin made landfall in nearly the same place.

Wind and soaked ground together are what bring trees down here. Sandy soils that drain fast in normal weather go soft in a tropical system's rain, and a big oak or a tall pine lets go at its roots instead of riding the storm out. The National Weather Service Mobile/Pensacola office covers the county, and tornadoes in tropical rain bands and spring squall lines bring trees down too.

Field insight:

Okaloosa County calls split by geography. Near the water in Fort Walton Beach, Shalimar, and Niceville, it's usually a laurel or water oak that failed over a house on a tight lot, which means rigging and careful lowering past fences, pools, and the neighbor's roof. North of Eglin, around Crestview and Baker, it's more often tall pines snapped across a roof or a long driveway, with cracked trees still standing next to them. We assess the standing trees before anyone works underneath.

Our Okaloosa County Emergency Response Process

Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Okaloosa County property safe again.

Our Process

How We Handle Your Tree Emergency

Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency

Step :Emergency Call

Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your Okaloosa County address, what the tree hit, whether lines or flooding are involved, and which roads and bridges in are open.

Step :Dispatch

We don't climb or run cranes in tropical-storm-force winds. Crews move once winds drop to safe levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.

Step :Safety Assessment

A certified arborist checks the break, root-plate lift in wet soil, damaged trees still standing nearby, and any line contact before work starts.

Step :Controlled Removal

Trees come off houses, cars, and outbuildings in rigged sections, lowered under control instead of cut where they lie.

Step :Property Protection

Mats, spotters, and controlled lowering protect roofs, fences, pool cages, septic areas, docks, driveways, and dune landscaping near the beach.

Step :Complete Cleanup

We chip, buck, and haul away debris, or cut and stage it at the curb for city or county storm-debris collection if you prefer.

Step :Insurance Documentation

We photograph and measure the damage before and during removal and send the file to you and your adjuster, which helps when a hurricane deductible applies.

Common Tree Challenges in Okaloosa County

Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.

Laurel Oak

Common in south-county neighborhoods; short-lived, often decayed inside, and one of the most failure-prone trees in a Gulf Coast hurricane

Water Oak

Weak wood and internal decay; drops big limbs and uproots in saturated soil and along the bayous

Southern & Sand Live Oak

Highly wind-resistant, but old live oaks near the bay carry long, heavy limbs over houses and can still lose them in a direct hit

Longleaf, Slash & Loblolly Pine

Dominant around Crestview and Baker; tall pines snap or uproot in high wind, and storm-stressed pines attract bark beetles and can die standing in the months after

Sand Pine

Found on the sandy ridges near the coast; shallow-rooted and among the least wind-resistant pines in the region

Okaloosa County Tree Regulations

Tree rules depend on where you are. Destin, Fort Walton Beach, Niceville, Valparaiso, Crestview, and the county's other cities each have their own land development codes, and unincorporated Okaloosa County has its own, mainly on commercial and development sites. Work seaward of the state's Coastal Construction Control Line in Destin or on Okaloosa Island can need a permit from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and dune vegetation is protected.

On single-family residential lots, Florida Statute 163.045 says a local government can't require a permit, fee, or replanting to remove a tree if the owner has documentation from an ISA Certified Arborist or Florida licensed landscape architect, based on a formal tree risk assessment, that the tree poses an unacceptable risk to people or property. That documentation has to exist before the work, and the law doesn't cover commercial property. We'll tell you which rules apply before we cut.

Frequently Asked Questions: Okaloosa County Tree Emergencies

Are you working in Okaloosa County after Hurricane Isaias?

Yes. Isaias made landfall near Destin on October 9, 2026, and left downed trees across the county, from Okaloosa Island and Fort Walton Beach to Crestview. We triage trees on occupied homes and blocked exits first. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour and we'll tell you honestly where you are in line.

Who is my power company in Okaloosa County?

It depends on the address. FPL, which absorbed Gulf Power, serves Fort Walton Beach, Destin, and much of the south end of the county. Choctawhatchee Electric Cooperative (CHELCO) serves many homes in the Crestview area and across north and east Okaloosa County. If a tree is on a line, call whichever utility sends your bill, stay well back, and treat the line as live. We remove the tree once the utility has made it safe.

Do I need a permit to remove a storm-damaged tree in Okaloosa County?

On a single-family residential lot, Florida law says the county or city can't require a permit if an ISA Certified Arborist or licensed landscape architect documents that the tree poses an unacceptable risk. Commercial properties and work on the beach dunes have their own rules. A tree that has already fallen on your house is an emergency, and we'll help with any paperwork afterward.

Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal in Okaloosa County?

Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies cover removal when a tree damages an insured structure, and treat a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything differently. Most Florida policies also carry a separate hurricane deductible that applies to hurricane losses. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes, and we never ask you to sign over your insurance benefits.

How does storm-debris pickup work in Okaloosa County?

After a declared storm, Okaloosa County and its cities usually run curbside debris collection with rules about separating vegetation from construction debris and keeping piles off hydrants, meters, and drains. Follow current county or city guidance. We can haul everything away, or cut and stage it at the curb if you want to use the free pickup.

A damaged pine is still standing near my house. Is it safe?

Not necessarily. Pines that cracked or twisted in a hurricane can fail hours or days later, and storm-stressed pines often attract bark beetles and die within months. If a pine has a visible crack, a fresh lean, or lifted soil at its base, keep people out from under it and have it assessed.
