Walton County runs from the 30A dunes to the pine woods, and Isaias hit both.
Walton County stretches from the Gulf beaches north across Choctawhatchee Bay to DeFuniak Springs, the county seat, and the Alabama line. South Walton is Miramar Beach, Santa Rosa Beach, and the 30A communities from Dune Allen and Blue Mountain Beach through Grayton Beach, Seaside, and Seagrove to Rosemary Beach and Inlet Beach, with sand live oaks, sand pines, slash pines, and magnolias crowded around homes and rentals. North of the bay, Freeport, DeFuniak Springs, Mossy Head, and Paxton sit among pine stands, farms, and hardwood bottoms along the Choctawhatchee River.
Hurricane Isaias made landfall just west of the county, near Destin, on October 9, 2026, as a Category 2. Freeport recorded a 110 mph gust, fallen trees littered yards across Miramar Beach, storm surge flattened dunes along 30A and washed out the road at Grayton Beach State Park, and other county roads washed away. CHELCO, the electric cooperative serving much of the county, had about 46,000 members without power at one point. Hurricane Opal in October 1995 also did some of its worst damage along the Walton County beaches.
Sand is what makes trees here vulnerable. Coastal trees grow in deep, fast-draining sand and take salt spray, and in a tropical system that sand saturates and shallow roots let go. Inland, tall pines snap or tip over in the same storms. The National Weather Service Tallahassee office covers Walton County, and tropical-system tornadoes and spring squall lines bring trees down here too.
Field insight:
Walton County calls split in two. In Miramar Beach, Santa Rosa Beach, and along 30A, it's usually a sand live oak or pine down across a roof, a pool cage, or a boardwalk on a lot with houses close on every side, often a second home or rental with the owner out of town. Up county, around Freeport and DeFuniak Springs, it's more often tall pines across a driveway, a fence line, or a roof, with long fall distances and cracked trees still standing. We plan each one differently.

Common Tree Emergencies We Handle in Walton County
Facing one of these right now? Go straight to the situation — we respond 24/7:
Our Walton County Emergency Response Process
Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Walton County property safe again.
How We Handle Your Tree Emergency
Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency
Step :Emergency Call
Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your Walton County address, what the tree hit, whether lines or flooding are involved, and which roads in are open.
Step :Dispatch
We don't climb or run cranes in tropical-storm-force winds. Crews move once winds drop to safe levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.
Step :Safety Assessment
A certified arborist checks the break, root-plate lift in wet sand or soil, damaged trees still standing nearby, and any line contact before work starts.
Step :Controlled Removal
Trees come off houses, cars, and outbuildings in rigged sections, lowered under control instead of cut where they lie.
Step :Property Protection
Mats, spotters, and controlled lowering protect roofs, pool cages, boardwalks, septic areas, driveways, and dune landscaping near the beach.
Step :Complete Cleanup
We chip, buck, and haul away debris, or cut and stage it at the curb for county storm-debris collection if you prefer.
Step :Insurance Documentation
We photograph and measure the damage before and during removal and send the file to you and your adjuster, which helps when a hurricane deductible applies.
Common Tree Challenges in Walton County
Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.
Sand Live Oak
Common across South Walton; salt- and wind-tolerant, but leaning, multi-stem trees over houses can split or tip when the sand is soaked
Sand Pine
Found on the coastal sand ridges; shallow-rooted and among the least wind-resistant pines in the region
Longleaf & Slash Pine
Dominant up county and common near the coast; tall pines snap or uproot in high wind, and storm-stressed pines attract bark beetles and can die standing
Laurel Oak
Short-lived and often decayed inside; one of the most failure-prone trees in a Gulf Coast hurricane
Southern Magnolia
Dense evergreen crowns catch a lot of wind; big limbs fail and trees uproot in saturated sand
Walton County Tree Regulations
Tree rules depend on where you are. Unincorporated Walton County, which includes Miramar Beach, Santa Rosa Beach, and most of 30A, has its own land development code with tree protections, and DeFuniak Springs and Freeport have their own codes. Work seaward of the state's Coastal Construction Control Line on Gulf-front lots can need a permit from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, dune vegetation is protected, and the coastal dune lakes carry their own environmental rules.
On single-family residential lots, Florida Statute 163.045 says a local government can't require a permit, fee, or replanting to remove a tree if the owner has documentation from an ISA Certified Arborist or Florida licensed landscape architect, based on a formal tree risk assessment, that the tree poses an unacceptable risk to people or property. That documentation has to exist before the work, and the law doesn't cover commercial property, including many rental properties. We'll tell you which rules apply before we cut.

Frequently Asked Questions: Walton County Tree Emergencies
Are you working in Walton County after Hurricane Isaias?
Yes. Isaias brought down trees from Miramar Beach and 30A to Freeport and beyond. We triage trees on occupied homes and blocked exits first, then trees on cars and outbuildings, then yard cleanup. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour and we'll tell you honestly where you are in line.
Who is my power company in Walton County?
It depends on the address. Choctawhatchee Electric Cooperative (CHELCO) serves much of the county, including large parts of South Walton. FPL, which absorbed Gulf Power, serves other areas, and Gulf Coast Electric Cooperative serves parts of the county as well. If a tree is on a line, call whichever utility sends your bill, stay well back, and treat the line as live. We remove the tree once the utility has made it safe.
I own a 30A or Miramar Beach rental and I'm not there. Can you still help?
Yes. Many South Walton homes are second homes or rentals. We can coordinate access with you or your property manager, send photos before and during the work, and put together documentation for your insurer so you don't have to be on site.
Do I need a permit to remove a storm-damaged tree in Walton County?
On a single-family residential lot, Florida law says the county or city can't require a permit if an ISA Certified Arborist or licensed landscape architect documents that the tree poses an unacceptable risk. Commercial and rental properties, Gulf-front lots, and work near the dunes or coastal dune lakes have their own rules. A tree that has already fallen on your house is an emergency, and we'll help with any paperwork afterward.
Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal in Walton County?
Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies cover removal when a tree damages an insured structure, and treat a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything differently. Most Florida policies also carry a separate hurricane deductible that applies to hurricane losses. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes, and we never ask you to sign over your insurance benefits.
How does storm-debris pickup work in Walton County?
After a declared storm, Walton County usually runs curbside debris collection with rules about separating vegetation from construction debris and keeping piles off hydrants, meters, and drains. Follow current county guidance. We can haul everything away, or cut and stage it at the curb if you want to use the free pickup.
