Santa Rosa County has more trees per house than almost anywhere on the coast.

Santa Rosa County runs from Navarre Beach on Santa Rosa Island north to the Alabama line, with Milton, the county seat, in the middle on the Blackwater River. The south end is the Gulf Breeze peninsula, Tiger Point, Midway, Holley, and Navarre, with live oaks, sand live oaks, and pines over waterfront homes. Pace and East Milton are fast-growing suburbs built into former pine land, and north of Milton the county opens into Chumuckla, Munson, Jay, and the Blackwater River State Forest.

Hurricanes have hit the county directly. Hurricane Dennis made landfall on Santa Rosa Island near Navarre Beach in July 2005, a year after Hurricane Ivan battered the area. Hurricane Sally in September 2020 dropped well over a foot of rain on the county and pushed the Blackwater River into major flooding. The April 2014 rain event flooded much of the county as well.

Wind is only half the problem. Saturated and flooded soil loosens roots, so pines and oaks tip over at wind speeds they'd normally survive, and in the newer subdivisions, pines left standing when the land was cleared are often tall, thin, and exposed. The National Weather Service Mobile/Pensacola office covers the county, and tornadoes in tropical rain bands bring trees down too.

Field insight:

Most Santa Rosa County calls are about pines. A tall pine left standing between houses in a Pace or East Milton subdivision snaps in the wind and lands across a roof, or several come down across a driveway and a fence line out in the county. Damaged pines left standing can fail later, so we assess everything nearby before anyone works under it. Near the water in Gulf Breeze and Navarre, it's more often a big oak limb over a house.

Our Santa Rosa County Emergency Response Process

Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Santa Rosa County property safe again.

Our Process

How We Handle Your Tree Emergency

Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency

Step :Emergency Call

Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your Santa Rosa County address, what the tree hit, whether lines or flooding are involved, and which roads in are open.

Step :Dispatch

We don't climb or run cranes in tropical-storm-force winds. Crews move once winds drop to safe levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.

Step :Safety Assessment

A certified arborist checks the break, root-plate lift in wet or flooded ground, damaged pines still standing nearby, and any line contact before work starts.

Step :Controlled Removal

Snapped pines and heavy oak limbs come off the house in rigged sections, lowered under control instead of cut where they lie.

Step :Property Protection

Mats, spotters, and controlled lowering protect roofs, fences, septic areas, docks, driveways, and lawns, including soft ground after flooding.

Step :Complete Cleanup

We chip, buck, and haul away debris, or cut and stage it at the curb for county storm-debris collection if you prefer.

Step :Insurance Documentation

We photograph and measure the damage before and during removal and send the file to you and your adjuster, which helps when a hurricane deductible applies.

Common Tree Challenges in Santa Rosa County

Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.

Longleaf & Slash Pine

The most common trees over Santa Rosa County homes; tall pines snap mid-trunk in high wind, and storm-stressed pines attract bark beetles and can die standing

Loblolly Pine

Common in subdivisions built into former pine land; shallow-rooted on wet sites and prone to uprooting in saturated soil

Laurel Oak

Short-lived and often decayed inside; one of the most failure-prone trees in a Gulf Coast hurricane

Southern & Sand Live Oak

Highly wind-resistant, but old live oaks in Gulf Breeze and Navarre carry long, heavy limbs over houses

Water Oak

Weak wood and internal decay; drops big limbs and uproots along the Blackwater and Yellow rivers and in low, wet yards

Santa Rosa County Tree Regulations

Tree rules depend on where you are. In unincorporated areas such as Pace, Navarre, and East Milton, Santa Rosa County's land development code applies, mainly on commercial and development sites. The cities of Milton and Gulf Breeze and the town of Jay have their own codes. Work seaward of the Coastal Construction Control Line on Navarre Beach can need a state permit, and dune vegetation is protected.

On single-family residential lots, Florida Statute 163.045 says a local government can't require a permit, fee, or replanting to remove a tree if the owner has documentation from an ISA Certified Arborist or Florida licensed landscape architect, based on a formal tree risk assessment, that the tree poses an unacceptable risk to people or property. That documentation has to exist before the work. We'll tell you which rules apply before we cut.

Frequently Asked Questions: Santa Rosa County Tree Emergencies

Do you cover all of Santa Rosa County?

Yes. We work across the whole county: Gulf Breeze, Tiger Point, Midway, Holley, Navarre, and Navarre Beach in the south; Milton, East Milton, Bagdad, Pace, and Avalon in the middle; and Harold, Munson, Chumuckla, and Jay up north. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour.

Who is my power company in Santa Rosa County?

Most of the county is served by FPL, which absorbed Gulf Power. Much of rural northern Santa Rosa County is served by Escambia River Electric Cooperative (EREC). If a tree is on a line, call whichever utility sends your bill, stay well back, and treat the line as live. We remove the tree once the utility has made it safe.

A damaged pine is still standing near my house. Should I worry?

Yes, until it's been checked. Pines that cracked or twisted in a storm can fail hours or days later, and hurricane-stressed pines often attract bark beetles and die within months. If a pine has a visible crack, a fresh lean, or lifted soil at its base, keep people out from under it and have it assessed.

Do I need a permit to remove a storm-damaged tree in Santa Rosa County?

On a single-family residential lot, Florida law says the county or city can't require a permit if an ISA Certified Arborist or licensed landscape architect documents that the tree poses an unacceptable risk. Commercial properties and work on the Navarre Beach dunes have their own rules. A tree that has already fallen on your house is an emergency, and we'll help with any paperwork afterward.

Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal in Santa Rosa County?

Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies cover removal when a tree damages an insured structure, and treat a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything differently. Most Florida policies also carry a separate hurricane deductible that applies to hurricane losses. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes, and we never ask you to sign over your insurance benefits.

How does storm-debris pickup work in Santa Rosa County?

After a declared storm, Santa Rosa County and its cities usually run curbside debris collection with rules about separating vegetation from construction debris and keeping piles off hydrants, meters, and drains. Follow current county guidance. We can haul everything away, or cut and stage it at the curb if you want to use the free pickup.
