Ridgefield's hills and old trees make storm damage a road-by-road problem.
Ridgefield is a hilly, heavily wooded town on the New York line in northern Fairfield County. Around the village and Main Street the trees are old and big, standing over historic houses and sidewalks. Out in Ridgebury, Titicus, Farmingville, Scotland, and Branchville, homes sit on wooded lots along winding back roads, with stone walls at the edge and overhead lines strung through the canopy. A single failed oak can close a road, pull down a line, and land on a house at the same time.
Tropical Storm Isaias on August 4, 2020 knocked out power to about two-thirds of Ridgefield the night it hit, and more than a week later Ridgefield still had some of the largest remaining outages in the state, with uprooted trees and wires still down. The October 2011 nor'easter, which dropped heavy wet snow on trees still in leaf, and Hurricane Sandy in 2012 also brought down trees across town.
Severe summer thunderstorms are the other big risk up here. On May 15, 2018, storms with tornadoes and a macroburst tore through the greater Danbury area, flattening trees in nearby Brookfield and killing two people in Danbury and New Fairfield when trees fell on vehicles. The National Weather Service New York office in Upton (OKX) issues warnings for Ridgefield.
Field insight:
Most Ridgefield calls involve a slope. A big oak or maple comes over on a hillside lot, lands on the house or the drive, and the ground is too steep or soft for heavy equipment to sit anywhere close. That means more rigging and more careful sequencing, often with other storm-damaged trees still standing around the one that failed. We assess all of them before anyone climbs.

Common Tree Emergencies We Handle in Ridgefield
Facing one of these right now? Go straight to the situation — we respond 24/7:
Our Ridgefield Emergency Response Process
Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Ridgefield property safe again.
How We Handle Your Tree Emergency
Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency
Step :Emergency Call
Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your Ridgefield address, what the tree hit, whether wires are down, and whether your road or driveway is passable.
Step :Dispatch
We don't climb or run cranes in damaging winds. Crews move once gusts drop to safe levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.
Step :Safety Assessment
A certified arborist checks the break, root-plate lift on the slope, hung limbs, nearby damaged trees, and any contact with Eversource lines.
Step :Controlled Removal
The tree comes off the house, car, or drive in rigged sections, lowered under control instead of cut where it lies.
Step :Property Protection
Mats, spotters, and controlled lowering protect roofs, stone walls, retaining walls, septic areas, and lawns on sloped ground.
Step :Complete Cleanup
We chip, buck, and haul away the debris, or cut and stack the wood on the property, following Town of Ridgefield disposal guidance.
Step :Insurance Documentation
We photograph and measure everything before and during removal and send the file to you and your adjuster.
Common Tree Challenges in Ridgefield
Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.
Red & White Oak
The big trees on Ridgefield's wooded hillsides; heavy limbs fail in wet snow and whole trees uproot when the ground is soaked
Sugar Maple
Old roadside and village trees along Main Street and the back roads; decayed trunks and unions split in wind and ice
Tulip Poplar
Tall, fast-growing trees on wooded lots; tops snap in thunderstorm downbursts and fall a long way
Eastern Hemlock
Common on shaded slopes and along streams; hemlock woolly adelgid has weakened many, and declining trees shed limbs
White Ash
Emerald ash borer is established in Connecticut; dead ash along roads and driveways become brittle and dangerous to fell
Ridgefield Tree Regulations
Under Connecticut General Statutes Section 23-59, Ridgefield's tree warden has care and control of trees that stand wholly or partly within a public road or town grounds, even when part of the tree is on private land. Unless a tree is an immediate public hazard, the warden must post notice at least ten days before removal, and anyone who objects can ask for a public hearing. Many of Ridgefield's big roadside trees fall under this, so we'll tell you when the town needs to be involved.
Work near wetlands, streams, and ponds, including around Mamanasco Lake and the town's many brooks, can fall under Ridgefield's inland wetlands review. Emergency hazard removal is usually allowed, though the town may need to be notified. We flag that before we start.

Frequently Asked Questions: Ridgefield Tree Emergencies
A tree came down on my house on a steep lot in Ridgefield. Can you still remove it?
Yes. Hillside lots are common in Ridgefield and we plan for them. When a crane or truck can't get close, we rig the tree off the house in sections and lower it to wherever the ground can safely take it, so the house doesn't take more damage.
A roadside tree fell in my yard in Ridgefield. Is it the town's?
It may be. Trees standing wholly or partly within the public road are under the tree warden's control, even if part of the trunk is on your land. Report it to the town. If it's on your house and creating an immediate hazard, call us too, and we'll coordinate with the town.
Who is the electric utility in Ridgefield?
Ridgefield is served by Eversource. If a tree is on a line, stay well back, treat the line as live, and don't touch fences or cars the wires are resting on. Report it to Eversource. Once the line is safe, our crew removes the tree.
Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal in Ridgefield?
Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies respond when a tree damages an insured structure like a house, garage, or fence, and treat a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything differently. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes to support your claim.
Are thunderstorms really a tree risk in Ridgefield, or just hurricanes?
Both. Tropical storms like Isaias cause the widest damage, but severe thunderstorms can be just as destructive on a smaller area. The May 2018 storms that hit the greater Danbury area brought down trees across several towns in a matter of minutes. Damaged trees left standing after any storm are worth having an arborist look at.
Which parts of Ridgefield do you cover?
All of Ridgefield: the village and Main Street, Ridgebury, Titicus, Farmingville, Scotland, Branchville, West Mountain, and the area around Mamanasco Lake. We also work in Danbury, Redding, and Wilton. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour.
