Litchfield County is mostly forest, and most of its homes are built inside it.
Litchfield County is Connecticut's largest county by area and one of its most heavily wooded. Torrington and New Milford are the biggest towns, but most of the county is small villages and rural roads through the Litchfield Hills: Litchfield, Washington, Woodbury, Kent, Cornwall, Sharon, Salisbury, Norfolk, and the Canaans. Homes sit on wooded lots and long gravel drives, often with big sugar maples and oaks along stone walls at the road, and the power lines run for miles through the trees.
Heavy wet snow is the classic Litchfield County tree storm. The October 2011 nor'easter arrived with leaves still on the trees and dropped more than a foot and a half of snow in places, with the National Weather Service recording about 18 inches in Winsted, 16.5 in Litchfield, and 14 in New Milford. Limbs and whole trees came down across the county, and many homes were without power for more than a week.
Summer storms do their share too. On May 15, 2018, an EF1 tornado touched down on the northeast side of Winsted during a severe outbreak across the region, and Tropical Storm Isaias on August 4, 2020 left tens of thousands of Eversource customers in the county without power, with towns like Sharon, North Canaan, Kent, and Cornwall among the hardest hit. Litchfield County is covered by the National Weather Service office in Albany (ALY).
Field insight:
Litchfield County jobs are about distance and terrain. A big maple or oak is down across a long drive or on a farmhouse roof, the road in may still be blocked by other trees, and the ground is often a slope, a ledge, or soft soil near a brook. We ask a lot of questions on the phone about access, then plan the rigging so the work stays off septic fields, stone walls, and old foundations.

Common Tree Emergencies We Handle in Litchfield County
Facing one of these right now? Go straight to the situation — we respond 24/7:
Our Litchfield County Emergency Response Process
Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Litchfield County property safe again.
How We Handle Your Tree Emergency
Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency
Step :Emergency Call
Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your town and address, what the tree hit, whether lines are down, and which roads in are open.
Step :Dispatch
We don't climb or run cranes in damaging winds or heavy snow. Crews move once conditions are safe, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.
Step :Safety Assessment
A certified arborist checks the break, snow and ice load, hung limbs, damaged trees still standing nearby, and any contact with Eversource lines.
Step :Controlled Removal
Trees come off houses, barns, cars, and driveways in rigged sections, lowered under control instead of cut where they lie.
Step :Property Protection
Mats, spotters, and controlled lowering protect roofs, stone walls, septic systems, wells, and lawns on soft or sloped ground.
Step :Complete Cleanup
We chip, buck, and haul away the debris, or cut and stack the wood for firewood, following your town's disposal guidance.
Step :Insurance Documentation
We photograph and measure everything before and during removal and send the file to you and your adjuster.
Common Tree Challenges in Litchfield County
Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.
Sugar Maple
The classic roadside and farmhouse tree of the Litchfield Hills; old trees with decayed unions split under wet snow and ice
Red & White Oak
Large, heavy-limbed trees on wooded lots; limbs fail under snow load and whole trees uproot in soaked ground
Eastern White Pine
Tall and common across the county; brittle limbs and tops break under heavy wet snow and fall on roofs and lines
Eastern Hemlock
Common on slopes and along brooks and the Housatonic; hemlock woolly adelgid has weakened many, and declining trees shed limbs
White Ash
Emerald ash borer is established in Connecticut; dead ash along roads and field edges become brittle and dangerous to fell
Litchfield County Tree Regulations
Connecticut has no county government, so tree rules are set town by town. Under Connecticut General Statutes Section 23-59, each town's tree warden has care and control of trees that stand wholly or partly within a public road or town grounds. Unless a tree is an immediate public hazard, the warden must post notice at least ten days before removal, and objections go to a public hearing. Trees along state routes like Route 7 and Route 8 fall under the state Department of Transportation instead.
Work near wetlands, streams, lakes, and the Housatonic River can fall under the local town's inland wetlands commission, and some villages have historic district rules that cover more than buildings. Emergency hazard removal is usually allowed, though a notification may be needed. We check the rules for your town before we start.

Frequently Asked Questions: Litchfield County Tree Emergencies
Do you cover all of Litchfield County, including the rural northwest corner?
Yes. We work across the county: Torrington, New Milford, Watertown, Thomaston, Woodbury, Litchfield, Washington, Roxbury, and Goshen, and up through Kent, Cornwall, Sharon, Salisbury, Norfolk, North Canaan, and Winsted. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour.
Why do so many trees come down in Litchfield County snowstorms?
Heavy wet snow sticks to every branch, and the county's big maples, oaks, and white pines can carry tons of extra weight in a single storm. Early and late season storms are the worst, because leaves still on the trees hold even more snow. That's what made the October 2011 nor'easter so destructive here.
A tree is down across my long driveway and I can't get out. What happens first?
Tell us that when you call, because a blocked exit moves you up the list. We cut a safe path first so you and emergency vehicles can get in and out, then finish removing the tree and cleaning up. If a line is tangled in it, the utility has to make it safe before we cut.
Who is the electric utility in Litchfield County?
Eversource serves the towns of Litchfield County. If a tree is on a line, stay well back, treat the line as live, and report it to Eversource. Once the utility has made the line safe, our crew removes the tree.
Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal in Litchfield County?
Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies respond when a tree damages an insured structure like a house, barn, garage, or fence, and treat a tree that falls in the woods or yard without hitting anything differently. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes to support your claim.
Do I need permission to remove a roadside tree that fell on my property?
Trees standing wholly or partly in a town road are under that town's tree warden, and trees along state routes are under the state Department of Transportation. Report the tree to the town or state. If it's on your house and creating an immediate hazard, call us too, and we'll coordinate with whoever controls it.
