Westport's big trees stand over houses, wires, and narrow roads all at once.

Westport is a heavily wooded town for a place this close to the shore. North of the Post Road, neighborhoods like Coleytown, Old Hill, and the streets off North Avenue and Long Lots Road sit on wooded lots, with tall oaks, maples, and tulip trees over the roofs and the roads. Many of those roads are narrow, winding, and lined with stone walls, and the overhead lines run right through the canopy. When a large tree fails, it usually takes the road, the wires, or a house with it.

Tropical Storm Isaias on August 4, 2020 showed how fast that happens. Westport was one of the hardest-hit towns in Connecticut: nearly the entire town lost power, and the town reported more than 200 roads initially blocked by downed trees and wires. The October 2011 nor'easter, which dropped heavy wet snow on trees still in leaf, and Hurricane Sandy in 2012 also brought down trees across town and caused long outages.

Down along the water, Saugatuck, Saugatuck Shores, Compo Beach, and Greens Farms take the wind straight off Long Island Sound, and the Saugatuck River valley runs right through the middle of town. The National Weather Service New York office in Upton (OKX) covers Westport and issues the wind, tropical, and winter storm warnings for coastal Fairfield County.

Field insight:

A typical Westport call is a large oak or tulip tree that came over on a wooded lot and is now resting on the roof, the driveway, or a wire, with more trees around it that took a beating in the same storm. Access is often the hard part: a long, curving drive, a stone wall at the road, and septic fields or landscaping we can't drive over. We plan the rigging around all of it before the first cut.

Our Westport Emergency Response Process

Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Westport property safe again.

Our Process

How We Handle Your Tree Emergency

Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency

Step :Emergency Call

Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your Westport address, what the tree hit, whether wires are down, and whether your road or driveway is blocked.

Step :Dispatch

We don't climb or run cranes in damaging winds. Crews move once gusts drop to safe levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.

Step :Safety Assessment

A certified arborist checks the break, root-plate lift, hung limbs, nearby damaged trees, and any contact with Eversource lines before work starts.

Step :Controlled Removal

The tree comes off the house, car, or driveway in rigged sections, lowered under control instead of cut where it lies.

Step :Property Protection

Mats, spotters, and controlled lowering protect roofs, stone walls, septic areas, driveways, and plantings on the way down.

Step :Complete Cleanup

We chip, buck, and haul away the debris, or cut and stack the wood where you want it, following Town of Westport disposal guidance.

Step :Insurance Documentation

We photograph and measure everything before and during removal and send the file to you and your adjuster.

Common Tree Challenges in Westport

Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.

Red & White Oak

The big shade trees over Westport's wooded lots; heavy limbs fail in tropical-storm wind and wet snow, and a whole tree can come over in soaked ground

Tulip Poplar

Very tall and fast-growing on the wooded lots north of the Post Road; tops and limbs snap in high wind

Norway & Sugar Maple

Common along older roads and around houses; tight, decay-prone unions split and drop limbs on wires and driveways

White Ash

Emerald ash borer is established in Connecticut, and dead ash become brittle and unpredictable to cut

American Beech

Large old yard and roadside specimens; beech leaf disease is present in Connecticut and weakens trees over time

Westport Tree Regulations

Under Connecticut General Statutes Section 23-59, Westport's tree warden has care and control of trees that stand wholly or partly within a public road or town grounds, even if the trunk is partly on private land. Unless a tree is an immediate public hazard, the warden must post notice at least ten days before removing it, and anyone who objects can request a public hearing. A lot of Westport's roadside trees fall into this category, so we'll tell you when the town needs to be involved.

Work near wetlands, the Saugatuck River, or other watercourses can fall under Westport's inland wetlands review, and work on tidal wetlands or along the shore at Saugatuck Shores, Compo, and Greens Farms can involve CT DEEP. Emergency hazard removal is usually allowed, but we flag those rules before we start.

Frequently Asked Questions: Westport Tree Emergencies

A tree from the road fell on my house in Westport. Who removes it?

Trees standing wholly or partly in the public road are under the control of Westport's tree warden, so report it to the town. If it's on your house and creating an immediate hazard, call us too. We can work with the town on getting it off the structure safely and document the damage for your insurer.

Who is the electric utility in Westport, and what do I do if a tree is on a line?

Westport is served by Eversource. Treat every downed line as live, stay well back, and don't touch fences or cars the wires are resting on. Report it to Eversource. Once the utility has made the line safe, our crew can remove the tree.

Why does Westport lose so many trees in tropical storms like Isaias?

Westport has a dense, mature canopy over narrow roads and overhead lines. Tropical storms arrive in summer with the trees in full leaf, which catches much more wind, and heavy rain softens the ground so whole trees tip over. In Isaias, nearly the whole town lost power and more than 200 roads were blocked.

Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal in Westport?

Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies respond when a tree damages an insured structure like a house, garage, or fence, and treat a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything differently. A tree on a car is usually a matter for the auto policy. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes to support your claim.

Can you get a tree off a house near the water at Saugatuck Shores or Compo?

Yes. Shoreline lots are often small with houses close together, so we lower the tree in short rigged sections into whatever space there is. If the work touches tidal wetlands or the shoreline, we'll flag any state rules before we start.

Which Westport neighborhoods do you cover?

All of Westport: Saugatuck, Saugatuck Shores, Greens Farms, Compo Beach, Coleytown, Old Hill, Long Lots, and downtown. We also work in Fairfield, Southport, Weston, Wilton, and Norwalk. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour.
