New Canaan is a town of large wooded lots, and the woods grow right up to the house.
Away from the village center, New Canaan is mostly homes set back on big, wooded lots along ridge roads like Ponus Ridge, Oenoke Ridge, Smith Ridge, and West Road. The tall oaks, maples, tulip trees, and hemlocks were often left standing when the houses went in, so mature trees stand close to roofs, long driveways, and the overhead lines that run along the roads. Many of those roads are narrow and lined with stone walls, which leaves little room to work around a downed tree.
Tropical Storm Isaias on August 4, 2020 hit New Canaan hard. The morning after, more than 80 percent of the town was still without power, and the first selectman reported that about 160 roads had been affected by downed trees and wires, with around 100 still partly or fully closed. The October 2011 nor'easter, which dropped heavy wet snow on trees still in leaf, and Hurricane Sandy in 2012 also left New Canaan with widespread tree damage and long outages.
The town sits on higher ground running north from the Merritt Parkway toward the New York line, and the National Weather Service New York office in Upton (OKX) issues its wind, tropical, and winter storm warnings. Summer thunderstorms with downbursts can do as much damage on a single street as a named storm.
Field insight:
New Canaan calls are mostly about distance and access. A big oak or tulip tree is down across a long driveway or leaning on the house, and the only way in is a narrow drive between stone walls and specimen plantings. We figure out where equipment can safely go and where each piece of wood can land before we start, so the cleanup doesn't do more damage than the storm.

Common Tree Emergencies We Handle in New Canaan
Facing one of these right now? Go straight to the situation — we respond 24/7:
Our New Canaan Emergency Response Process
Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your New Canaan property safe again.
How We Handle Your Tree Emergency
Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency
Step :Emergency Call
Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your New Canaan address, what the tree hit, whether wires are involved, and how long and passable your driveway is.
Step :Dispatch
We don't climb or run cranes in damaging winds. Crews move once gusts drop to safe levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.
Step :Safety Assessment
A certified arborist checks the break, the lean, hung limbs, damaged trees still standing nearby, and any contact with Eversource lines before work starts.
Step :Controlled Removal
The tree comes off the roof, deck, or driveway in rigged sections, lowered under control instead of cut where it lies.
Step :Property Protection
Ground mats, spotters, and controlled lowering protect roofs, stone walls, lawns, septic areas, and established plantings.
Step :Complete Cleanup
We chip, buck, and haul away the debris, or cut and stack the wood on the property, following Town of New Canaan disposal guidance.
Step :Insurance Documentation
We photograph and measure everything before and during removal and send the file to you and your adjuster.
Common Tree Challenges in New Canaan
Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.
Red, White & Black Oak
The dominant big trees on New Canaan's wooded lots; heavy limbs fail in wet snow and whole trees uproot in soaked ground
Tulip Poplar
Among the tallest trees in town; a failed top or trunk has a long reach toward the house
Sugar & Norway Maple
Common along roads and stone walls; decayed unions split and drop limbs onto wires and driveways
Eastern Hemlock
Hemlock woolly adelgid has weakened many in Connecticut, and declining hemlocks shed limbs under snow and ice
White Ash
Emerald ash borer is established in Connecticut; dead roadside and yard ash turn brittle and dangerous to fell
New Canaan Tree Regulations
Under Connecticut General Statutes Section 23-59, New Canaan's tree warden has care and control of trees that stand wholly or partly within a public road or town grounds, even when part of the tree is on private land. Unless a tree is an immediate public hazard, the warden must post notice at least ten days before removal, and objections go to a public hearing. With so many big trees along New Canaan's roads, we'll tell you when the town needs to be involved.
Work near wetlands, streams, or ponds, which are common on New Canaan's wooded lots, can fall under the town's inland wetlands review. Emergency hazard removal is usually allowed, though the town may need to be notified. We flag that before we start.

Frequently Asked Questions: New Canaan Tree Emergencies
A tree is down across my long driveway in New Canaan. Can you clear it?
Yes. Blocked driveways are among our most common New Canaan calls. If the tree is also on the house or blocking your only way out, tell us when you call, because that moves it up the list. We clear a path first and then finish the cleanup.
A roadside tree fell on my property in New Canaan. Is it the town's?
It may be. Trees standing wholly or partly within the public road are under the tree warden's control, even if part of the trunk is on your land. Report it to the town. If it's on your house and creating an immediate hazard, call us too, and we'll coordinate with the town.
Who is the electric utility in New Canaan?
New Canaan is served by Eversource. If a tree is on a line, stay well back, treat the line as live, and report it to Eversource. Once the utility has made the line safe, our crew removes the tree.
Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal in New Canaan?
Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies respond when a tree damages an insured structure like a house, garage, or fence, and treat a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything differently. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes to support your claim.
Why did New Canaan lose so many trees in Isaias?
Isaias came through in August with the trees in full leaf and the ground soaked, so tall oaks and tulip trees caught far more wind and many uprooted. With mature trees close to roads and lines, about 160 roads in town were affected and most of New Canaan lost power.
Which parts of New Canaan do you cover?
All of New Canaan: the village, Ponus Ridge, Oenoke Ridge, Smith Ridge, West Road, Talmadge Hill, Silvermine, and Canoe Hill. We also work in Stamford, Darien, Norwalk, and Wilton. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour.
