Wayne's lake communities were built into the woods, and the woods are still standing over the houses.

Wayne is a big township with very different kinds of ground in it. Packanack Lake, Pines Lake, and Lionshead Lake began as lake communities in the hills, with houses set into oak and hickory woods on rocky slopes. Preakness and the ridges toward High Mountain are wooded and steep. The southern and western neighborhoods sit low, along the Pompton and Passaic rivers, on flat ground where the soil stays wet.

Each part of town fails its own way. On the hillside lots, tall oaks rooted in shallow soil over rock tip over once the ground is saturated, often toward the house downhill. Along the rivers, flooding from storms like Irene in 2011 soaks the root zone for days, and trees that survived the water come down in the next wind.

The October 2011 snowstorm, Sandy in 2012, and Isaias in August 2020 all brought down trees and lines across the township. Wayne is split between two utilities, PSE&G for most of the township and JCP&L for the rest, so neighbors on different circuits can see very different restoration times after the same storm.

Field insight:

In the lake communities, access is the hard part. Narrow roads, steep driveways, stone walls, and houses close to the water or set into the hillside mean we often can't get a crane or a truck anywhere near the tree. A lot of Wayne jobs come down to rigging the tree off the roof in small pieces and carrying or winching the wood back up to the road.

Our Wayne Emergency Response Process

Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Wayne property safe again.

Our Process

How We Handle Your Tree Emergency

Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency

Step :Emergency Call

Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your Wayne address, what the tree hit, whether the road or driveway is blocked, and whether wires are involved.

Step :Dispatch

We don't climb or run cranes in damaging winds. Crews move once gusts drop to safe levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.

Step :Safety Assessment

A certified arborist checks the break, the lean, hung limbs, wire contact, the slope, and whether the ground can carry equipment.

Step :Controlled Removal

The tree comes off the house in rigged sections or by crane pick where the road allows, lowered under control on sloped lots so nothing rolls.

Step :Property Protection

Mats, spotters, and controlled lowering protect roofs, decks, docks, stone walls, and the neighbor's house just downhill.

Step :Complete Cleanup

We chip, buck, and haul away the debris and clear the road and driveway, or stack the wood where you want it.

Step :Insurance Documentation

We photograph and measure everything and send the file to you and your adjuster, which helps separate tree damage from flood damage along the rivers.

Common Tree Challenges in Wayne

Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.

Northern Red Oak

The dominant big tree in the lake communities and hills; uproots from shallow soil over rock when the ground is soaked

Pin Oak

Common in the township's postwar neighborhoods; dense crowns catch wind and dead lower limbs drop

Tulip Poplar

Very tall in the wooded sections; brittle tops snap out in summer thunderstorms

Silver Maple

Grows along the Pompton and Passaic floodplain; brittle wood and frequent limb failure after flooding

Shagbark Hickory

Native to Wayne's rocky ridges; heavy, tall trees that come down whole on thin hillside soil

Wayne Tree Regulations

Trees along township streets are Wayne Township's to handle, and county roads belong to Passaic County. Planned removals of healthy trees on private land can need township approval, especially on larger lots, steep slopes, or near lakes and streams, so check before cutting. A tree that is already down or an immediate hazard to people or a building is handled differently. We make the property safe first and tell you if the township needs to be involved.

Work along the Pompton and Passaic rivers and the lakes can also fall under New Jersey's flood hazard and wetlands rules, administered by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection. New Jersey requires tree care companies to be licensed through the NJ Board of Tree Experts, so ask any crew for the license number before work starts.

Frequently Asked Questions: Wayne Tree Emergencies

Is my Wayne home on PSE&G or JCP&L?

Most of Wayne is served by PSE&G, and part of the township is served by JCP&L. Your electric bill tells you which one. Report downed lines to your own utility; that's the one that has to make the line safe before anyone cuts the tree.

Can you remove a tree on a steep lake-community lot?

Yes. Packanack Lake, Pines Lake, and the hillside streets are a big part of our Wayne work. We rig sections down under control instead of dropping them, and carry or winch the wood back to the road when a truck can't get close.

Why do trees fall after a flood is over?

Along the Pompton and Passaic rivers, floodwater can sit on the root zone for days. Roots lose their hold and some begin to die, and trees that survived the flood itself can come down in the next windy storm. If your yard flooded, have the big trees near the house checked.

Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal in Wayne?

Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies respond when a tree damages an insured structure like a house, garage, or fence. Flood damage is usually separate and needs flood insurance. Check with your carrier. We document the tree damage on its own, with photos, measurements, and arborist notes.

What should I do if a tree is on a power line in Wayne?

Treat every downed line as live. Stay well back, keep kids and pets away, and don't touch cars or fences the wires are resting on. Report it to PSE&G or JCP&L, whichever serves your street. Once the utility has made the line safe, our crew can remove the tree.

Do you cover Pompton Lakes, Lincoln Park, and nearby towns?

Yes. Along with every part of Wayne, we work in Pompton Lakes, Riverdale, Lincoln Park, Fairfield, Totowa, Little Falls, North Haledon, and Franklin Lakes. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour.
