Ridgewood's canopy is a century old, and it grew up over the houses.
Ridgewood is a commuter village that filled in around its railroad station in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and a lot of it still looks that way: Colonial Revival, Tudor, and Victorian houses on deep lots, with oaks, maples, and tulip trees that were planted or left standing when the streets were laid out. In Upper Ridgewood the lots get larger and the land rolls, and the trees get bigger with them. Very few houses here have a big tree that couldn't reach the roof.
That canopy has taken real losses. After Irene, Sandy, and the October 2011 snowstorm, which dropped heavy wet snow on trees still in full leaf across northern New Jersey, the village council moved in 2013 to set up a volunteer shade tree commission to replant what had been lost. When Tropical Storm Isaias came through on August 4, 2020, PSE&G counted more than 3,000 outages in Ridgewood that night, and one tree on West Glen Avenue sat on top of two parked cars for two days before it was cleared.
Ida in September 2021 was a rain storm more than a wind storm, but it still put more than a thousand village customers in the dark. Soaked soil is the common thread. Ridgewood's big shade trees rarely fail on a dry day; they fail when the ground is saturated and the wind comes after it.
Field insight:
A lot of Ridgewood calls are whole-tree failures rather than broken limbs. A mature oak or maple tips out of soaked ground, the root plate comes up out of the lawn, and the trunk lands across a slate or cedar roof with the crown hanging over the street. On those jobs the root plate matters as much as the trunk: once the weight is off, it can try to sit back down, so we plan the cuts around it.

Common Tree Emergencies We Handle in Ridgewood
Facing one of these right now? Go straight to the situation — we respond 24/7:
Our Ridgewood Emergency Response Process
Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Ridgewood property safe again.
How We Handle Your Tree Emergency
Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency
Step :Emergency Call
Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your Ridgewood address, what the tree hit, whether it's blocking the street or your driveway, and whether wires are involved.
Step :Dispatch
We don't climb or run cranes in damaging winds. Crews move once gusts drop to safe levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.
Step :Safety Assessment
A certified arborist checks the root plate, the lean, hung limbs, wire contact, and where each piece can come down on the lot without hitting the house, the garage, or the neighbor's yard.
Step :Controlled Removal
The tree comes off the roof in rigged sections or by crane pick where the street allows it, with the root plate stabilized before the last cuts.
Step :Property Protection
Ground mats, spotters, and controlled lowering protect slate and cedar roofs, stone walls, driveways, and the plantings that make these lots what they are.
Step :Complete Cleanup
We chip, buck, and haul the debris, clear the sidewalk and street, and leave the wood stacked on site if you want to keep it.
Step :Insurance Documentation
We photograph and measure everything before and during removal and send the file to you and your adjuster, including the arborist's notes on why the tree failed.
Common Tree Challenges in Ridgewood
Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.
Northern Red Oak
The big shade tree over many Ridgewood roofs; long, heavy limbs and whole-tree uprooting in saturated soil
Pin Oak
Common street and yard tree; dense crowns catch wind and wet snow, and lower limbs die back and drop
Norway Maple
Planted widely along older village streets; tight branch unions split and dense shallow roots let go when the ground is soaked
Tulip Poplar
Very tall and fast-growing with brittle wood; tops and long limbs snap out in summer thunderstorms
American Beech
Older yard trees with shallow roots; beech leaf disease has been found across northern New Jersey and weakens trees over several seasons
Ridgewood Tree Regulations
Trees in the village right-of-way, which usually means the strip between the sidewalk and the curb, are the Village of Ridgewood's, and the village handles them. If a street tree has come down on your property, report it to the village. If it's on your house and creating an immediate hazard, call us too, and we'll coordinate with the village on getting it off the structure. Planned removals of private trees can need village approval, so check before cutting anything that isn't already down or dangerous.
New Jersey requires tree care companies to be licensed through the NJ Board of Tree Experts and to work under a Licensed Tree Expert or Licensed Tree Care Operator. After a big storm, out-of-state crews knock on doors in Bergen County. Ask for the license number before anyone starts cutting.
Helpful links: New Jersey Forest Service (NJDEP), the Village of Ridgewood portal, and the ISA arborist resource NJ Board of Tree Experts — verify a licensed operator.

Frequently Asked Questions: Ridgewood Tree Emergencies
A village street tree fell on my house in Ridgewood. Who removes it?
Trees in the village right-of-way belong to the Village of Ridgewood, so report it to the village. If it's on your house and creating an immediate hazard, call us as well. We can work with the village on getting it off the structure safely and document the damage for your insurer.
Why do so many big trees in Ridgewood uproot instead of breaking?
Because they usually fail after heavy rain. Ridgewood's mature oaks and maples carry huge crowns, and once the soil is saturated the roots lose their grip. Wind behind a rain storm, like what followed Isaias in 2020, tips whole trees out of the ground with the root plate attached.
A tree fell on my car on a Ridgewood street. Can you lift it off?
Yes. We take the weight off in sections instead of cutting it where it lies, so the car doesn't take more damage. We photograph the scene before we start. A tree on a car is usually a matter for the auto policy, not the homeowners policy.
Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal in Ridgewood?
Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies respond when a tree damages an insured structure like a house, garage, or fence, and treat a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything differently. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes to support your claim.
What should I do if a tree is on a power line in Ridgewood?
Treat every downed line as live. Stay well back, keep kids and pets away, and don't touch cars or fences the wires are resting on. Report it to PSE&G. Once the utility has made the line safe, our crew can remove the tree.
Do you cover Glen Rock, Ho-Ho-Kus, and the rest of northwest Bergen County?
Yes. Along with every part of Ridgewood, we work in Glen Rock, Ho-Ho-Kus, Midland Park, Wyckoff, Paramus, Washington Township, and Fair Lawn. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour.
