They helped explain the options and gave multiple solutions for us to consider. Appreciate the great work they did and would definitely call them again if the need arises. Highly recommend.

Montclair climbs a mountain, and its big trees lean downhill toward the houses.

Montclair runs up the eastern face of First Watchung Mountain, and the higher you go the bigger the houses, the steeper the lots, and the older the trees. Upper Mountain Avenue and the streets around it are lined with oaks, maples, and tulip trees well over a hundred years old, many standing above the house on the uphill side. Down the hill, in neighborhoods around Watchung Plaza, Walnut Street, and the township's older blocks, the lots are tighter and the street trees reach across to the houses on both sides.

The trees between the sidewalk and the curb are mostly the township's, and Montclair maintains them through its Shade Trees Division. The trees behind the sidewalk are yours, and on most Montclair lots those are the big ones. Both kinds came down in numbers in the October 2011 snowstorm, which loaded trees still in leaf across northern New Jersey, and again in Sandy in 2012. A study of street trees that fell in Sandy along the Glen Ridge and Montclair border found many of them were large, mature trees with trunks around a meter across.

Isaias in August 2020 was another reminder: a fast tropical storm with gusts strong enough to bring down whole trees across Essex County, and long outages afterward on PSE&G's lines.

Field insight:

Slope changes everything on a Montclair job. A tree that fails on the uphill side of a house lands with its full weight on the roof, and the pieces want to roll once they're cut. On the hillside streets we rig more and drop less, and we plan where each section will stop before anyone starts a saw. Narrow driveways and stone retaining walls mean the crane or chipper often has to work from the street.

Our Montclair Emergency Response Process

Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Montclair property safe again.

Our Process

How We Handle Your Tree Emergency

Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency

Step :Emergency Call

Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your Montclair address, what the tree hit, whether it's a street tree or a yard tree, and whether wires are involved.

Step :Dispatch

We don't climb or run cranes in damaging winds. Crews move once gusts drop to safe levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.

Step :Safety Assessment

A certified arborist checks the break, the lean, hung limbs, wire contact, and how the slope will move each piece once it's cut free.

Step :Controlled Removal

The tree comes off the roof in rigged sections or by crane pick from the street, lowered under control instead of dropped on a sloped lot.

Step :Property Protection

Mats, spotters, and slow lowering protect slate roofs, stone retaining walls, porches, and the neighbor's house just downhill.

Step :Complete Cleanup

We chip, buck, and haul away the debris and clear the sidewalk and street, or stack the wood where you want it.

Step :Insurance Documentation

We photograph and measure everything before and during removal and send the file to you and your adjuster, which helps when a tree damaged more than one property.

Common Tree Challenges in Montclair

Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.

Northern Red Oak

The dominant big tree on Montclair's hillside lots; heavy limbs over roofs and whole-tree failure when the slope is saturated

Pin Oak

Common along older streets; dense crowns hold wet snow and ice, and dead lower limbs drop without warning

Norway Maple

Widely planted street tree; tight, decay-prone unions split in wind and land on cars and porches

Tulip Poplar

Very tall with brittle wood; tops snap out in summer thunderstorms and tropical gusts

Sugar Maple

Older yard trees can hollow at the base while still leafing out normally, hiding the defect until a storm finds it

Montclair Tree Regulations

A township tree is one planted on public property or in the right-of-way, which includes most trees between the sidewalk and the curb. Only township personnel or tree companies working for the township may prune or remove one. If a township tree is down or dangerous, report it to the Department of Community Services during business hours or the Montclair Police after hours. If it's on your house, call us too, and we'll coordinate with the township on getting it off the structure.

New Jersey requires tree care companies to be licensed through the NJ Board of Tree Experts and to work under a Licensed Tree Expert or Licensed Tree Care Operator. Ask for that number before work starts, especially after a storm when unfamiliar crews are going door to door.

Helpful links: New Jersey Forest Service (NJDEP), the Township of Montclair portal, and the ISA arborist resource NJ Board of Tree Experts — verify a licensed operator.

Frequently Asked Questions: Montclair Tree Emergencies

A township street tree fell on my house in Montclair. Who removes it?

Street trees in the right-of-way belong to the Township of Montclair, and only the township or its contractors may cut them. Report it to the Department of Community Services, or the police after hours. If it's on your house and creating an immediate hazard, call us as well, and we'll work with the township on getting it off safely.

Is the tree in my front yard mine or the township's?

Most trees between the sidewalk and the curb are the township's. Trees behind the sidewalk, on your lot, are usually yours, along with the responsibility if one fails. If you're not sure, the township can tell you before work starts.

Can you work on the steep lots up the mountain?

Yes. Hillside jobs are a big part of Montclair work. We rig sections down under control instead of dropping them, because cut wood on a slope rolls toward whatever is downhill, and we often run the crane or chipper from the street when driveways are too narrow or steep.

Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal in Montclair?

Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies respond when a tree damages an insured structure like a house, garage, or fence, and treat a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything differently. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes to support your claim.

What should I do if a tree is on a power line in Montclair?

Treat every downed line as live. Stay well back, keep kids and pets away, and don't touch cars or fences the wires are resting on. Report it to PSE&G. Once the utility has made the line safe, our crew can remove the tree.

Do you cover Glen Ridge, Verona, and nearby Essex County towns?

Yes. Along with every Montclair neighborhood, we work in Glen Ridge, Verona, Cedar Grove, Bloomfield, West Orange, and Little Falls. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour.
