Between the Navesink and the Shrewsbury, the wind comes off open water.
Red Bank sits on the south bank of the Navesink River, and the towns around it, Fair Haven and Rumson to the east and Little Silver to the south, fill the peninsula between the Navesink and the Shrewsbury. It's an old place by Monmouth County standards. Red Bank's side streets are lined with Victorian and early-twentieth-century houses close to the sidewalk, and the river towns have bigger lots with oaks, maples, and old pines planted long before the houses were expanded around them.
Water on two sides means wind with nothing to slow it. A northeaster or a tropical storm pushes straight across the rivers into the trees along the banks, and the soil near the water stays wet. Sandy in October 2012 was the extreme case for this area, flooding the low ground along both rivers and toppling trees across eastern Monmouth County.
Tropical Storm Isaias in August 2020 was the more typical tree storm. By late afternoon on August 4, about 69 percent of JCP&L's Monmouth County customers had lost power, Fair Haven's police chief said most of the borough was dark, and three days later 39 percent of Red Bank customers were still out.
Field insight:
Along the rivers, we see a lot of trees that have been quietly leaning toward the water for years. Bank-side roots get undercut, the crown grows out toward the light over the river, and one wet northeaster finally tips it, often back toward the house as the root plate lets go. Away from the water, in downtown Red Bank, the work is tighter: close-set houses, parked cars on both curbs, and lines down the middle of the block.

Common Tree Emergencies We Handle in Red Bank
Facing one of these right now? Go straight to the situation — we respond 24/7:
Our Red Bank Emergency Response Process
Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Red Bank property safe again.
How We Handle Your Tree Emergency
Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency
Step :Emergency Call
Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your address in Red Bank or the river towns, what the tree hit, whether the street is blocked, and whether wires are involved.
Step :Dispatch
We don't climb or run cranes in damaging winds. Crews move once gusts drop to safe levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.
Step :Safety Assessment
A certified arborist checks the break, the lean, hung limbs, wire contact, and whether soaked ground near the water can hold a crane or a loaded truck.
Step :Controlled Removal
The tree comes off the roof or car in rigged sections, lowered into the space the lot allows, with mats under equipment on soft ground.
Step :Property Protection
Spotters, mats, and controlled lowering protect roofs, porches, bulkheads, docks, fences, and parked cars that couldn't be moved.
Step :Complete Cleanup
We chip, buck, and haul away the debris and clear the sidewalk and street, following local disposal guidance.
Step :Insurance Documentation
We photograph and measure everything and send the file to you and your adjuster, which helps separate tree damage from flood damage after a coastal storm.
Common Tree Challenges in Red Bank
Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.
Northern Red Oak
Large shade trees on the river-town lots; heavy limbs and uprooting in soil that stays wet near the water
Pin Oak
Common street and yard tree in Red Bank and Little Silver; dense crowns catch wind, and dead lower limbs drop
Norway Maple
Planted along older Red Bank streets; tight branch unions split and fall onto cars, porches, and wires
Eastern White Pine
Tall screens on larger Rumson and Fair Haven lots; catches wind like a sail and snaps or uproots in northeasters
Sycamore
Big trees near the water; heavy limbs fail, and leaning bank-side trees can tip back toward the house
Red Bank Area Tree Regulations
Red Bank, Rumson, Fair Haven, and Little Silver are separate boroughs, and each sets its own rules for street trees and planned tree removals. Trees in the public right-of-way are generally the borough's to handle. A tree already down, or one that's an immediate hazard to people or a building, is a different situation from a planned removal. We make the property safe first and tell you whether your borough needs to be involved.
Work along the Navesink and Shrewsbury shorelines can also fall under New Jersey's coastal and wetlands rules, administered by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection. Emergency hazard removal near the water is usually workable, but we flag it before we start. New Jersey also requires tree care companies to be licensed through the NJ Board of Tree Experts.

Frequently Asked Questions: Red Bank Tree Emergencies
Do you cover Rumson, Fair Haven, and Little Silver as well as Red Bank?
Yes. The river towns are one service area for us. We work in Red Bank, Rumson, Fair Haven, Little Silver, Middletown, Shrewsbury, Tinton Falls, Oceanport, and Sea Bright. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour.
Why do trees near the Navesink seem to fall so easily?
Soil near the river stays wet, bank-side roots get undercut, and the wind comes across open water with nothing to slow it. Trees along the shore also tend to lean out over the river toward the light. In a northeaster or tropical storm, that combination tips them over.
A borough street tree fell on my house. Who removes it?
Trees in the right-of-way are generally the borough's, so report it to your borough. If it's on your house and creating an immediate hazard, call us too. We can work with the borough on getting it off the structure safely and document the damage for your insurer.
Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal after a coastal storm?
Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies respond when a tree damages an insured structure like a house, garage, or fence. Flood damage is usually separate and needs flood insurance. Check with your carrier. We document the tree damage on its own, with photos, measurements, and arborist notes, so the adjuster can tell it apart from water damage.
What should I do if a tree is on a power line in Red Bank?
Treat every downed line as live. Stay well back, keep kids and pets away, and don't touch cars or fences the wires are resting on. Report it to JCP&L. Once the utility has made the line safe, our crew can remove the tree.
Can you remove a tree that fell on a car on a downtown Red Bank street?
Yes. We lift the wood off in sections instead of cutting it where it lies, so the car doesn't take more damage, and we photograph everything first. A tree on a car is usually a matter for the auto policy.
