Hattiesburg grew up in the longleaf pine woods, and those pines are still overhead.

Hattiesburg is the hub of Mississippi's Pine Belt, a city built on the longleaf pine timber trade. The older neighborhoods near downtown, the Hattiesburg Historic Neighborhood District, the Oaks District, and Parkhaven, have big water oaks, willow oaks, pecans, and magnolias over early 1900s houses. West toward Oak Grove and out into Lamar County, subdivisions sit among tall loblolly and longleaf pines, and many lots back right up to wooded stands.

Hattiesburg is about 70 miles from the Gulf, but hurricanes still reach it. Hurricane Katrina carried gusts near 100 mph into the city on August 29, 2005, and downed trees covered roads across the Pine Belt. Tornadoes are the other big threat. On February 10, 2013, an EF4 tornado tracked from Oak Grove through Hattiesburg and the University of Southern Mississippi into Petal, and on January 21, 2017, an EF3 tornado struck before dawn, killing four people in the area and damaging William Carey University.

Tall pines and wet ground are a bad combination. A pine that sways through a dry windstorm can snap or uproot when the clay and sandy soils are soaked, and pines cracked in a storm can fail days later. The National Weather Service Jackson office covers Forrest and Lamar counties, and squall lines and tornadoes in spring and late fall bring down as many trees here as tropical systems do.

Field insight:

A typical Hattiesburg call is a tall pine snapped or uprooted across a roof, often with more damaged pines still standing in the same yard. Long fall distances, trunks resting on rafters under load, and hung tops are the hazards. In the older neighborhoods, it's more often a decayed water oak that split over a house or porch. Either way, we look at every standing tree around the job before anyone works under them, and we rig loaded pieces down instead of cutting them where they lie.

Our Hattiesburg Emergency Response Process

Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Hattiesburg property safe again.

Our Process

How We Handle Your Tree Emergency

Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency

Step :Emergency Call

Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your Hattiesburg-area address, what the tree hit, whether anyone is trapped or a line is down, and which roads in are open.

Step :Dispatch

We don't climb or run cranes in high winds or while storms are still moving through. Crews move once winds drop to safe working levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.

Step :Safety Assessment

A certified arborist checks the break, root-plate lift in wet soil, cracked or leaning pines still standing nearby, hung tops, and any line contact before work starts.

Step :Controlled Removal

Pines and oaks come off houses, cars, and outbuildings in rigged sections, lowered under control instead of cut where they lie.

Step :Property Protection

Mats, spotters, and controlled lowering protect roofs, porches, fences, driveways, septic areas, and lawns, including soft ground after heavy rain.

Step :Complete Cleanup

We chip, buck, and haul away debris, or cut it to size and stage it at the curb for city storm-debris collection when that's what you prefer.

Step :Insurance Documentation

We photograph and measure the damage before and during removal and send the file to you and your adjuster to support your claim.

Common Tree Challenges in Hattiesburg

Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.

Loblolly Pine

The most common pine in Hattiesburg yards and subdivisions; tall trunks snap or uproot in high wind and saturated soil, and storm-stressed pines attract bark beetles

Longleaf Pine

The Pine Belt's native pine and more wind-firm than loblolly, but old trees are very tall and a snapped top or trunk can reach far across a lot

Water Oak

Very common in older neighborhoods; weak wood and internal decay, and it drops big limbs or splits over houses

Pecan

Old yard pecans are brittle and rank poorly for wind resistance; large limbs fail in storms

Southern Magnolia

Dense evergreen crowns catch a lot of wind; large limbs split and older trees can uproot when the ground is soaked

Hattiesburg Tree Regulations

Hattiesburg has a tree ordinance, a city arborist, and a long run as a Tree City USA. The city manages trees in the public right-of-way, so report a fallen street tree to the city. Work in the city's historic districts can involve additional review, and development sites are subject to the city's landscape and tree rules.

Rules differ outside city limits. Petal, Purvis, Sumrall, and unincorporated Forrest and Lamar counties each have their own requirements. A tree that has already fallen on a house is an emergency, and clearing it comes first. For a healthy or damaged tree that's still standing, check local rules before removal. We'll tell you which rules apply before we cut.

Frequently Asked Questions: Hattiesburg Tree Emergencies

Do you handle tornado damage in Hattiesburg?

Yes. Tornado damage is some of the hardest work we do: trees twisted and thrown in different directions, pieces hung in other trees, and houses with several trees on them at once. Hattiesburg has been hit before, including the February 2013 EF4 and the January 2017 EF3. We triage the worst properties first and clear access so families and utility crews can get in.

Who is my power company in Hattiesburg?

Most of Hattiesburg is served by Mississippi Power. Some rural parts of Forrest and Lamar counties are served by electric power associations such as Pearl River Valley Electric. If a tree is on a line, call whichever utility sends your bill, stay well back, and treat the line as live. We remove the tree once the utility has made it safe.

Should I worry about the pines still standing after a storm?

Yes, look at them. A pine that cracked, twisted, or started leaning in the storm can fail days later, and storm-stressed pines often attract bark beetles and die over the following months. If a damaged pine could reach your house, have an arborist look at it. We'll tell you which ones can stay and which need to come down.

Do you serve Petal, Oak Grove, and Lamar County?

Yes. We work across Hattiesburg and the surrounding area, including Petal, Oak Grove, West Hattiesburg, Purvis, Sumrall, and the rest of Forrest and Lamar counties. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour.

When can you get to my Hattiesburg property after a storm?

Crews can't safely climb or run cranes until the winds drop and storms have passed, so no one should be cutting during the storm itself. After that, we triage: trees on occupied homes, trapped people, and blocked exits come first, then trees on cars and outbuildings, then yard cleanup. We'll tell you honestly where you are in line.

Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal in Hattiesburg?

Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies cover removal when a tree damages an insured structure, and treat a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything differently. Some policies carry a separate wind or hurricane deductible. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes to support your claim.
