Gulfport has rebuilt after the worst storms on record, and its trees took the hits too.
Gulfport stretches from the Mississippi Sound north along Highway 49 into the pine country. The older neighborhoods near the water, Handsboro, Mississippi City, Bayou View, and the streets around downtown, have mature live oaks, laurel and water oaks, and magnolias over houses and lines. North of Interstate 10, Orange Grove, Lyman, and North Gulfport are newer subdivisions cut out of pine woods, where tall slash and loblolly pines stand right behind backyards.
Harrison County has taken two of the strongest hurricanes to hit the United States. Hurricane Camille struck the Mississippi coast in August 1969, and Hurricane Katrina came ashore near the Louisiana line on August 29, 2005, driving a storm surge across the Gulfport and Biloxi waterfront and downing trees far inland. Hurricane Zeta crossed the coast in October 2020 and left downed trees, lines, and widespread outages across Harrison County.
Wind is only part of it. Saturated sandy soil lets big oaks and pines tip over at wind speeds they'd survive in dry weather, and pines that cracked in a storm can fail days later. The National Weather Service New Orleans/Baton Rouge office covers Harrison County, and tornadoes in tropical rain bands and spring squall lines bring trees down here as well.
Field insight:
Gulfport calls usually split by which side of I-10 you're on. Near the water, it's a laurel or water oak that failed at a decayed union over a house, or a heavy live oak limb across a roof, and that means rigging and lowering in sections. Up north in Orange Grove, Lyman, and toward Saucier, it's more often a tall pine snapped across a roof, a fence, or a driveway, with other damaged pines still standing. We check those standing trees before anyone works under them.

Common Tree Emergencies We Handle in Gulfport
Facing one of these right now? Go straight to the situation — we respond 24/7:
Our Gulfport Emergency Response Process
Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Gulfport property safe again.
How We Handle Your Tree Emergency
Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency
Step :Emergency Call
Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your Gulfport or Biloxi address, what the tree hit, whether lines or flooding are involved, and which roads in are open.
Step :Dispatch
We don't climb or run cranes in tropical-storm-force winds. Crews move once winds drop to safe working levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.
Step :Safety Assessment
A certified arborist checks the break, root-plate lift in wet soil, cracked pines still standing nearby, hung limbs, and any line contact before work starts.
Step :Controlled Removal
Trees come off houses, cars, and outbuildings in rigged sections, lowered under control instead of cut where they lie.
Step :Property Protection
Mats, spotters, and controlled lowering protect roofs, porches, fences, driveways, and lawns, including soft ground after heavy rain.
Step :Complete Cleanup
We chip, buck, and haul away debris, or cut it to size and stage it at the curb for city storm-debris collection when that's what you prefer.
Step :Insurance Documentation
We photograph and measure the damage before and during removal and send the file to you and your adjuster, which helps when a hurricane or wind deductible applies.
Common Tree Challenges in Gulfport
Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.
Southern Live Oak
Common in Gulfport's older neighborhoods and among the most wind-resistant trees on the coast, but old trees carry long, heavy limbs over houses
Laurel Oak
Short-lived and often decayed inside by middle age; one of the trees most likely to break or fall in a Gulf Coast hurricane
Water Oak
Weak wood and internal decay; drops big limbs and uproots in saturated soil along the bayous
Slash, Longleaf & Loblolly Pine
Dominant in north Gulfport; tall pines snap or uproot in high wind, and storm-stressed pines attract bark beetles and can die standing in the months after
Pecan
Old yard pecans are brittle and rank poorly for wind resistance; large limbs fail in tropical storms
Gulfport Tree Regulations
Gulfport adopted a revised tree ordinance in 2025 that requires a permit to remove protected trees, a category that includes mature live oaks and southern magnolias, and generally requires replacement trees or a contribution when one is removed. Trees in the public right-of-way are the city's responsibility, so report a fallen street tree to the city.
Biloxi, Long Beach, and unincorporated Harrison County each have their own rules, so the answer depends on which side of the city line you're on. A tree that has already fallen on a house is an emergency, and clearing it comes first. For a damaged protected tree that's still standing, check with the city before removal. We'll tell you which rules apply before we cut.

Frequently Asked Questions: Gulfport Tree Emergencies
Do I need a permit to remove a storm-damaged tree in Gulfport?
Gulfport requires a permit to remove protected trees, which include mature live oaks and magnolias. A tree that has already fallen on your house is an emergency, and clearing it comes first. For a damaged protected tree that's still standing, check with the city before removal. We'll tell you which rules apply to your lot.
Do you also cover Biloxi and the rest of Harrison County?
Yes. We work across Gulfport and Biloxi, including Woolmarket and D'Iberville, and west to Long Beach and Pass Christian and north toward Saucier. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour.
Who is my power company in Gulfport?
Most of Gulfport and Biloxi is served by Mississippi Power. Much of northern and rural Harrison County is served by Coast Electric Power Association. If a tree is on a line, call whichever utility sends your bill, stay well back, and treat the line as live. We remove the tree once the utility has made it safe.
When can you get to my Gulfport property after a hurricane?
Crews can't safely climb or run cranes until the winds drop, so no one should be cutting during the storm itself. After that, we triage: trees on occupied homes, trapped people, and blocked exits come first, then trees on cars and outbuildings, then yard cleanup. We'll tell you honestly where you are in line.
Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal in Gulfport?
Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies cover removal when a tree damages an insured structure, and treat a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything differently. Many coastal Mississippi policies carry a separate hurricane or named-storm deductible, and some wind coverage is written through a separate policy. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes to support your claim.
What should I do if a pine falls on my roof in north Gulfport?
Get everyone out of the rooms under the tree, stay clear of any lines, and call us. Don't try to cut it yourself: a pine resting on a roof is often loaded and can shift or spring when cut. We also check the pines still standing around the house, because trees cracked in the same storm can fail days later.
