Dennis is one of the Cape towns that crosses from one coast to the other. The north side sits on Cape Cod Bay, with Dennis Village, East Dennis, Scargo Lake, Corporation Beach, and Mayflower Beach along Route 6A. The south side sits on Nantucket Sound, with Dennis Port, West Dennis, and West Dennis Beach, and Bass River forming the western line with Yarmouth. South Dennis sits in the wooded middle.

That matters because the two shores take different storms. A nor'easter drives its hardest wind onto the bay side, into the big trees along 6A and the bluffs above the beaches. A hurricane or tropical storm tracking up from the south hits Dennis Port and West Dennis first, with southerly wind and surge along the Sound. When the October 2019 bomb cyclone knocked out power across much of the Cape, homes on both sides of town were dealing with trees on lines.

Summer storms add a third kind of risk. On July 23, 2019, the tornado outbreak that touched down in Yarmouth and Harwich also brought damage to Dennis, a reminder that a narrow path of violent wind can cross the town regardless of which coast is closer.
