Barnstable is the largest town on Cape Cod by area, and it behaves less like one town than seven. Hyannis is the commercial center, but the rest of Barnstable is mostly residential: Centerville, Osterville, and Cotuit along the Nantucket Sound side, Marstons Mills and West Barnstable through the wooded middle of the Cape, and Barnstable Village on Cape Cod Bay. A single storm can hit each of them in a different way.
On the south side, Osterville, Cotuit, and the streets around Craigville Beach carry large, long-established estate trees over shingled homes, guest cottages, and waterfront lawns. Those trees take the brunt of southerly winds from Nantucket Sound, the same exposure that made Hurricane Bob in August 1991 so destructive across the Cape. Across the town to the north, Route 6A runs through Barnstable Village and West Barnstable inside the Old King's Highway Regional Historic District, where old street trees stand close to historic homes and stone walls, and Sandy Neck faces the northeast winds off Cape Cod Bay.

Those villages sit on glacial sand, which drains fast and keeps roots shallow. When a long rain or a nor'easter saturates the sand, it loses its grip and the whole root plate lifts, so pines and oaks come down roots and all. An uprooted tree can still shift after it's cut, which is why we assess the root plate before making cuts.
