Harwich has two waterfronts, and they take different storms.

Harwich's southern shore faces Nantucket Sound. Harwich Port, West Harwich, and South Harwich sit along it, with Allen Harbor, Wychmere Harbor, and Saquatucket Harbor cut into the shoreline and Red River Beach at the eastern end. That south-facing coast takes the brunt of southerly winds and surge when a hurricane or tropical storm tracks up the coast, the way Hurricane Bob did in August 1991 when trees came down across the Cape.

The town's northeast corner reaches Pleasant Bay, and East Harwich faces the other way. A nor'easter that barely rattles the harbors can push hard gusts across the bay into the oaks and pines around East Harwich. Between the two shores, North Harwich, Harwich Center, and the land around Long Pond are wooded neighborhoods where the tree cover is thick and the roads are small.

Harwich also knows that damage doesn't always come from the coast. On July 23, 2019, a tornado touched down in Harwich during a summer storm that also hit Yarmouth and Dennis, snapping and uprooting trees in a narrow path that had little to do with which way the house faced. It's a reminder that summer thunderstorms on the Cape can do real damage too.
