Staten Island is the city's borough of yards, and the yards have big trees.
Staten Island doesn't look like the rest of New York City. Most of it is one- and two-family houses with driveways and back yards, from the older North Shore neighborhoods of St. George, West Brighton, Port Richmond, and Westerleigh to the hills of Grymes Hill, Emerson Hill, and Todt Hill and the newer streets of Great Kills, Eltingville, Annadale, Huguenot, and Tottenville on the South Shore. The Staten Island Greenbelt runs down the middle of the island, and many of the houses around it back right onto the woods.
The island has seen what storms can do. Hurricane Sandy in October 2012 drove surge across the East and South Shore, flooding Midland Beach, New Dorp Beach, Oakwood Beach, and Tottenville, and brought down trees across the island. Tropical Storm Isaias on August 4, 2020 was mostly a wind event here; NYC Parks logged more than 2,000 reports of tree damage on Staten Island alone. Strong nor'easters and summer thunderstorms bring trees down in between.
Exposure to wind off Raritan Bay and Lower New York Bay, steep wooded slopes on the hills, and wet ground near the shore and the Greenbelt streams all make it easier for big trees to fail. The National Weather Service New York/Upton office covers Staten Island.
Field insight:
On Staten Island, the first question on every call is whose tree it is. Street trees belong to the city and NYC Parks handles them, so we don't cut those. Most of our work is private trees: a big oak or tulip poplar from the back yard on the roof, or a yard tree across the driveway and onto the car. Lots are narrow with houses close on both sides, so we rig the tree off in sections and lower it into whatever space there is.

Staten Island response: back-yard oak rigged off a roof between close-set houses

Common Tree Emergencies We Handle in Staten Island
Facing one of these right now? Go straight to the situation — we respond 24/7:
Our Staten Island Emergency Response Process
Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Staten Island property safe again.
How We Handle Your Tree Emergency
Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency
Step :Emergency Call
Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your Staten Island address, what the tree hit, whether it's a street tree or a private tree, and whether wires are involved.
Step :Dispatch
We don't climb or run cranes in damaging winds. Crews move once winds drop to safe levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.
Step :Safety Assessment
A certified arborist confirms the tree is on private property, then checks the break, the lean, hung limbs, wire contact, and where each piece can safely come down.
Step :Controlled Removal
The tree comes off the roof, deck, or car in small rigged sections, lowered slowly into whatever space the lot allows between houses.
Step :Property Protection
Spotters, mats, and controlled lowering protect neighboring houses, fences, pools, sidewalks, and cars that couldn't be moved.
Step :Complete Cleanup
We chip, buck, and haul away the debris and clear the driveway and sidewalk in front of your property.
Step :Insurance Documentation
We photograph and measure everything before and during removal and send the file to you and your adjuster, which helps when a tree damaged more than one property.
Common Tree Challenges in Staten Island
Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.
Northern Red & Pin Oak
Big yard trees across the island and in the Greenbelt neighborhoods; heavy limbs fail in wet snow, and whole trees tip over in soaked soil
Tulip Poplar
Very tall trees on the wooded hills and around the Greenbelt; brittle upper wood breaks out in high wind and lands far from the trunk
Norway & Silver Maple
Common in older yards; decay and weak unions let big limbs split onto roofs, fences, and cars
Callery Pear
Widely planted in yards; its tight, narrow branch angles split apart in wind and wet snow
Sweetgum
Common on the South Shore; large limbs break in storms, and shallow roots in wet ground near the shore let trees lean or fall
Staten Island Tree Regulations
Street trees and park trees on Staten Island are under the jurisdiction of NYC Parks. It's illegal to remove or damage a city tree, and any work on or near one needs a Parks tree work permit, so private contractors don't cut street trees. If a street tree falls on your house or car, report it to 311 and Parks will respond. Trees on private property are the owner's responsibility, and we handle those.
Parts of Staten Island are in special zoning districts, including the Special Natural Area District around Todt Hill, Emerson Hill, Lighthouse Hill, and Shore Acres, where removing trees on private property can require review by the Department of City Planning. Removing a private tree that has already fallen on a house, or that's an immediate hazard, generally goes ahead right away. We'll tell you if your property is in one of these districts.

Frequently Asked Questions: Staten Island Tree Emergencies
A city street tree fell on my house on Staten Island. Who removes it?
Street trees belong to the city, and NYC Parks is responsible for them. Report it to 311 right away, and call 911 if anyone is hurt or trapped. It's illegal for a private contractor to remove or cut a city tree without a Parks permit, so we won't cut it. We can document the damage to your house for your insurer.
How do I know if the tree is a street tree or mine?
In general, a tree growing in the strip between the sidewalk and the curb, or in the sidewalk itself, is a city street tree. A tree growing in your yard is private, even if it hangs over the street. If you aren't sure, call 311 or ask us. We'll check before we start.
My own yard tree fell on my house. Can you remove it?
Yes. Private trees are the owner's responsibility, and that's our work. We rig the tree off the roof in sections instead of cutting it where it lies, protect the neighboring houses and fences, and document everything for your insurance.
What should I do if a tree is on a power line on Staten Island?
Treat every downed line as live. Stay well back, keep kids and pets away, and don't touch fences or cars the wires are resting on. Report it to Con Edison and to 911 if there's fire or sparking. Once the utility has made the line safe, our crew can remove a private tree.
Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal on Staten Island?
Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies respond when a tree damages an insured structure like a house, garage, or fence, and treat a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything differently. A tree on a car is usually a matter for the auto policy. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes to support your claim.
Which parts of Staten Island do you cover?
All of it: the North Shore from St. George to Port Richmond and Westerleigh, the hill neighborhoods of Grymes Hill, Emerson Hill, and Todt Hill, Mid-Island from New Dorp to New Springville, and the South Shore from Great Kills to Tottenville. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour.
