In Scarsdale, the big trees are part of the house, until one comes down on it.
Scarsdale is a village of mature trees. Neighborhoods like Fox Meadow, Greenacres, Heathcote, Quaker Ridge, Edgewood, Murray Hill, and Arthur Manor were built out in the early and middle twentieth century around oaks, tulip poplars, and maples that are now very large. Many of the houses are Tudors and Colonials with slate roofs, stone walls, and gardens set under that canopy, and overhead lines run along most streets. When a big tree fails here, it usually lands on something expensive.
Tropical Storm Isaias on August 4, 2020 showed how fast that can happen. Hundreds of trees and wires came down across the village, trees landed on houses, and by the village's count roughly half of Scarsdale's Con Edison customers lost power, some of them for about a week. Sandy in 2012 brought widespread tree damage and outages across Westchester, and nor'easters, wet snow, and summer thunderstorms bring down trees and limbs in between.
Rock outcrops, shallow soil, and low, wet ground along the Bronx River and Hutchinson River corridors make it easier for a big tree to tip over once the soil is soaked. The National Weather Service New York/Upton office covers Scarsdale and the rest of Westchester County.
Field insight:
Scarsdale calls usually come down to protecting the house. A red oak or tulip poplar with a trunk wider than a doorway has split onto a slate roof, with a stone wall, a garden, and a neighbor's garage close by. We almost never have a clear drop zone. We rig the tree off in sections, lower each piece under control, and protect the slate and the landscaping while we work.

Scarsdale response: oak lowered in sections off a slate roof, stone wall protected

Common Tree Emergencies We Handle in Scarsdale
Facing one of these right now? Go straight to the situation — we respond 24/7:
Our Scarsdale Emergency Response Process
Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Scarsdale property safe again.
How We Handle Your Tree Emergency
Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency
Step :Emergency Call
Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your Scarsdale address, what the tree hit, whether wires are involved, and whether your street or driveway is blocked.
Step :Dispatch
We don't climb or run cranes in damaging winds. Crews move once winds drop to safe levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.
Step :Safety Assessment
A certified arborist checks the break, root-plate lift, hung limbs, wire contact, and where each piece can safely come down on a crowded, landscaped lot.
Step :Controlled Removal
The tree comes off the roof, porch, or car in rigged sections, often with a crane, lowered slowly instead of cut where it lies.
Step :Property Protection
Mats, spotters, and controlled lowering protect slate and tile roofs, stone walls, patios, pools, plantings, and neighboring houses.
Step :Complete Cleanup
We chip, buck, and haul away the debris and clear the driveway and street, following Village of Scarsdale guidance.
Step :Insurance Documentation
We photograph and measure everything before and during removal and send the file to you and your adjuster, which helps when a slate roof or stonework is involved.
Common Tree Challenges in Scarsdale
Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.
Northern Red Oak
The signature big tree of Scarsdale's older neighborhoods; heavy scaffold limbs fail under wet snow and ice, and whole trees tip in soaked soil
Tulip Poplar
Very tall, straight trees common on older lots; brittle upper wood breaks out in high wind and lands far from the trunk
Sugar & Norway Maple
Common yard and street trees; decay pockets and tight unions let big limbs split onto roofs, cars, and wires
American Beech
Large old specimens on many properties; beech leaf disease is present in Westchester and weakens trees over time
White Ash
Emerald ash borer has killed many ash trees in Westchester; dead ash becomes brittle and breaks unpredictably
Scarsdale Tree Regulations
Scarsdale regulates tree removal on private property under its village code, administered through the Village Engineer. Removing larger trees, certain protected species, and trees in wetlands or wetland buffers can require a permit, and some removals require replacement planting. The code allows removal in an actual emergency to protect life or property. Trees along village streets belong to the village.
Edgemont and the Scarsdale mailing addresses in the Town of Greenburgh are not in the village and follow Greenburgh's rules instead. A tree that has already fallen on your house can generally be removed right away. We'll check which rules apply to your address and help with any notice or paperwork afterward.

Frequently Asked Questions: Scarsdale Tree Emergencies
Do I need a permit to remove a storm-damaged tree in Scarsdale?
Scarsdale's village code regulates tree removal, and some removals need a permit from the Village Engineer, especially larger trees, certain protected species, and trees in wetland areas. The code allows removal in an actual emergency to protect life or property. If a tree is on your house, call us. We'll help with any notice to the village afterward.
A village street tree fell on my house. Who removes it?
Trees along village streets belong to the Village of Scarsdale, so report a fallen street tree to the village. If it's on your house and creating an immediate hazard, call us too. We can work with the village on getting it off the structure safely and document the damage for your insurer.
What should I do if a tree is on a power line in Scarsdale?
Treat every downed line as live. Stay well back, keep kids and pets away, and don't touch fences or cars the wires are resting on. Report it to Con Edison. Once the utility has made the line safe, our crew can remove the tree.
Can you remove a big tree from a slate roof without breaking more of it?
Yes. We never cut a large tree where it lies on a slate roof. We rig it, often with a crane, and lift it off in sections so the weight comes off evenly. Then we cover the opening and photograph the damage for your roofer and insurer.
Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal in Scarsdale?
Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies respond when a tree damages an insured structure like a house, garage, or fence, and treat a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything differently. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes to support your claim.
Do you cover Edgemont and the other Scarsdale-area neighborhoods?
Yes. We work in every Scarsdale neighborhood, including Fox Meadow, Greenacres, Heathcote, Quaker Ridge, and Edgewood, and in Edgemont, Hartsdale, White Plains, Eastchester, and the rest of central Westchester. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour.
