Wareham is the town at the very top of Buzzards Bay, next to the Cape Cod Canal and the Bourne Bridge, which is why it calls itself the Gateway to Cape Cod. The bay narrows as it runs northeast, and in a hurricane that shape funnels surge toward its head. The 1938 Hurricane, Hurricane Carol in 1954, and Hurricane Bob in 1991 each brought severe flooding and damage around the upper bay.
The town is really a string of villages. Along the water are Onset, Point Independence, Swifts Beach, Parkwood Beach, Cromesett, Great Neck, and Tempest Knob, many of them beach neighborhoods of closely spaced homes on small lots. Inland are Wareham Center, East Wareham, and West Wareham, with cranberry bogs, pine woods, and houses set back on wooded lots.
Almost all of it sits on sandy, glacial outwash soil with a lot of pitch pine and white pine. Sand drains fast in dry weather but, once it's saturated, it gives roots very little grip. That's why a long soaking rain followed by high wind, whether from a tropical system out of the south or a nor'easter out of the northeast, tends to leave pines uprooted across roofs, cars, and roads all over town.

In Onset and the beach villages, a single pine can fall across two or three cottages and a narrow street at once, and there's rarely room for a big truck.
