Sandwich was incorporated in 1639, making it the oldest town on Cape Cod, and it's the first town you reach after crossing the Sagamore Bridge. Around Sandwich Village, Shawme Pond, and Route 6A, generations of growth have left large, mature trees standing close to historic homes, churches, and stone walls. When one of those trees fails in a storm, the removal has to be as careful as the house it's leaning on.
The town has two very different sides. North of Route 6A, Town Neck Beach, the Sandwich Boardwalk, Scorton Neck, and the marshes of East Sandwich face Cape Cod Bay and take the northeast winds of a nor'easter head-on, as they did in the March 2018 storms. South of the Mid-Cape Highway, Forestdale is largely wooded, with homes built into pitch pine and oak on sandy ground, where trees come down across driveways and lines when the soil is saturated.
