Fairhaven faces New Bedford across the harbor, but most of the town reaches south into Buzzards Bay. Sconticut Neck runs down the middle, and West Island hangs off its end, reached by a causeway. Yes, once the causeway is open and safe to cross. West Island depends on that single road, so if a tree is blocking it or a home out there, tell us when you call. Trees that block the only way out of a neighborhood are among the first we handle once winds drop to safe working levels.
Why do trees on Sconticut Neck uproot instead of breaking?
The neck is low, sandy, and exposed on both sides to Buzzards Bay. Heavy rain and wind-driven water saturate the sand, and a waterlogged root plate loses its grip, so a tree tips over roots and all. We check the root plate on any leaning tree before cutting, because releasing tension on a partly uprooted tree can make it shift.
Is Fairhaven protected by the New Bedford hurricane barrier?
Partly. The barrier protects the inner harbor, including the Fort Phoenix side of Fairhaven, from storm surge. It doesn't protect Sconticut Neck, West Island, or the rest of the Buzzards Bay shore from surge, and it does nothing about wind anywhere in town.
