Acushnet sits north of New Bedford and Fairhaven along the Acushnet River, and it feels very different from its coastal neighbors. Past Acushnet Center, the roads through Long Plain, Perry Hill, and out toward the Hamlin Street area wind through woods, past cranberry bogs and farm fields, with houses set back on wooded lots. Oaks across southeastern Massachusetts have been defoliated by winter moth and spongy moth in recent years, and red maples along the bog edges and wet ground grow fast and weak. After a soaking rain, those trees come down onto houses and across the only road in or out.
