Escambia County runs from the beach to the pine woods, and storms hit all of it.
Escambia County is Florida's westernmost county, stretching about 50 miles from the Gulf beaches at Perdido Key and Pensacola Beach to the Alabama line at Century. The south end is dense: Pensacola, Warrington, Myrtle Grove, Ferry Pass, Brent, and Ensley, with mature oaks over houses and lines. North of Interstate 10 it opens into Beulah, Cantonment, Molino, Walnut Hill, and McDavid, where homes sit on bigger lots surrounded by pine stands and hardwood bottoms along the Escambia River.
The county has taken direct hits. Hurricane Ivan in 2004 put Escambia County in its strongest winds and destroyed spans of the I-10 bridge over Escambia Bay. Hurricane Dennis followed in 2005, and Hurricane Sally in 2020 stalled offshore and dropped well over a foot of rain across the county. The April 2014 rain event flooded neighborhoods across the south end.
Wet ground is what makes these storms so hard on trees. Oaks and pines that stand up to wind in dry weather tip over when the soil is saturated, and on the barrier island, salt spray and sandy soil keep trees shallow-rooted. The National Weather Service Mobile/Pensacola office covers the county, and tornadoes in tropical rain bands and spring squall lines bring trees down too.
Field insight:
Escambia County calls split into two kinds. In Pensacola and the south-end neighborhoods, it's usually a laurel or water oak that failed over a house on a tight lot, which means rigging and careful lowering. Up county, in Cantonment, Molino, and beyond, it's more often several tall pines down across a driveway, a fence line, or a roof, with long fall distances and damaged trees still standing. We plan each one differently.

Common Tree Emergencies We Handle in Escambia County
Facing one of these right now? Go straight to the situation — we respond 24/7:
Our Escambia County Emergency Response Process
Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Escambia County property safe again.
How We Handle Your Tree Emergency
Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency
Step :Emergency Call
Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your Escambia County address, what the tree hit, whether lines or flooding are involved, and which roads in are open.
Step :Dispatch
We don't climb or run cranes in tropical-storm-force winds. Crews move once winds drop to safe levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.
Step :Safety Assessment
A certified arborist checks the break, root-plate lift in wet soil, damaged trees still standing nearby, and any line contact before work starts.
Step :Controlled Removal
Trees come off houses, cars, and outbuildings in rigged sections, lowered under control instead of cut where they lie.
Step :Property Protection
Mats, spotters, and controlled lowering protect roofs, fences, septic areas, driveways, lawns, and dune landscaping near the beach.
Step :Complete Cleanup
We chip, buck, and haul away debris, or cut and stage it at the curb for county storm-debris collection if you prefer.
Step :Insurance Documentation
We photograph and measure the damage before and during removal and send the file to you and your adjuster, which helps when a hurricane deductible applies.
Common Tree Challenges in Escambia County
Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.
Laurel Oak
Common in south-county neighborhoods; short-lived, often decayed inside, and one of the most failure-prone trees in a Gulf Coast hurricane
Water Oak
Weak wood and internal decay; drops big limbs and uproots in saturated soil and along creeks and the Escambia River
Southern Live Oak
Highly wind-resistant, but old trees with long limbs over houses can still lose them in a direct hit
Longleaf, Slash & Loblolly Pine
Dominant up county; tall pines snap or uproot in high wind, and storm-stressed pines attract bark beetles and can die standing in the months after
Sand Live Oak & Sand Pine
Found on the barrier island and sandy coastal sites; sand pine is shallow-rooted and ranks among the least wind-resistant pines
Escambia County Tree Regulations
Tree rules depend on where you are. Inside Pensacola, the city's land development code applies; in unincorporated Escambia County, the county's code regulates protected trees, especially on commercial and development sites. Pensacola Beach land is leased through the Santa Rosa Island Authority, which has its own approvals. Work seaward of the Coastal Construction Control Line at Pensacola Beach or Perdido Key can need a state permit, and dune vegetation is protected.
On single-family residential lots, Florida Statute 163.045 says a local government can't require a permit, fee, or replanting to remove a tree if the owner has documentation from an ISA Certified Arborist or Florida licensed landscape architect, based on a formal tree risk assessment, that the tree poses an unacceptable risk to people or property. That documentation has to exist before the work. We'll tell you which rules apply before we cut.

Frequently Asked Questions: Escambia County Tree Emergencies
Do you cover all of Escambia County, including the north end?
Yes. We work across the whole county: Pensacola, Pensacola Beach, Perdido Key, Warrington, Myrtle Grove, Ferry Pass, Ensley, and Beulah, and north through Cantonment, Molino, Walnut Hill, McDavid, and Century. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour.
Who is my power company in Escambia County?
Most of the county is served by FPL, which absorbed Gulf Power. Much of rural northern Escambia County is served by Escambia River Electric Cooperative (EREC). If a tree is on a line, call whichever utility sends your bill, stay well back, and treat the line as live. We remove the tree once the utility has made it safe.
Do I need a permit to remove a storm-damaged tree in Escambia County?
On a single-family residential lot, Florida law says the county or city can't require a permit if an ISA Certified Arborist or licensed landscape architect documents that the tree poses an unacceptable risk. Commercial properties, Pensacola Beach leaseholds, and work on the dunes have their own rules. A tree that has already fallen on your house is an emergency, and we'll help with any paperwork afterward.
Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal in Escambia County?
Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies cover removal when a tree damages an insured structure, and treat a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything differently. Most Florida policies also carry a separate hurricane deductible that applies to hurricane losses. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes, and we never ask you to sign over your insurance benefits.
How does storm-debris pickup work in Escambia County?
After a declared storm, Escambia County usually runs curbside debris collection with rules about separating vegetation from construction debris and keeping piles off hydrants, meters, and drains. Follow the county's current guidance. We can haul everything away, or cut and stage it at the curb if you want to use the free pickup.
When can you get to my property after a hurricane?
Crews can't safely climb or run cranes until the winds drop, so no one should be cutting during the storm. After that, we triage: trees on occupied homes, trapped people, and blocked exits come first, then trees on cars and outbuildings, then yard cleanup. We'll tell you honestly where you are in line.
