Westfield protects its trees by ordinance, and storms still take the big ones down.

Westfield is a town of big trees. Its neighborhoods were built out over the first half of the twentieth century, and areas like Wychwood, the Gardens, and the blocks around Mindowaskin and Tamaques parks still have the oaks and maples that went in or were kept back then. The houses are mostly single-family, set on generous lots, with big trees in front, behind, and on both sides.

The town takes that canopy seriously. Its Tree Preservation Ordinance, adopted in 2019 and tightened in 2024, covers trees on private property as well as town trees, and added neighbor notification for removals. That keeps old trees standing, which is the point, but it also means many Westfield lots carry trees at full mature size, with full mature weight over the roof.

When Tropical Storm Isaias hit on August 4, 2020, downed trees and wires closed streets across town, and the next evening about 1,640 PSE&G customers in Westfield were still without power. Summer thunderstorms and wet nor'easters do the same thing on a smaller scale most years.

Field insight:

In Westfield the tree is usually only half the job. The other half is getting it out of a backyard with no truck access, past a fence, a patio, and a neighbor's garden, on a lot where the next big tree is twenty feet away. We bring the wood out in pieces small enough to carry or to lift over the house by crane, and we flag right away whether the failure is a hazard removal or something that will need a town permit.

Our Westfield Emergency Response Process

Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Westfield property safe again.

Our Process

How We Handle Your Tree Emergency

Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency

Step :Emergency Call

Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your Westfield address, what the tree hit, whether it's front or back, and whether wires are involved.

Step :Dispatch

We don't climb or run cranes in damaging winds. Crews move once gusts drop to safe levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.

Step :Safety Assessment

A certified arborist checks the break, the lean, hung limbs, wire contact, and how the wood will get out of the yard, including whether a crane pick over the house is the safest route.

Step :Controlled Removal

The tree comes off the roof in rigged sections, lowered into the space the lot allows, or lifted out to the street by crane.

Step :Property Protection

Ground mats, spotters, and controlled lowering protect roofs, fences, patios, lawns, and the trees on the lot that are still standing.

Step :Complete Cleanup

We chip, buck, and haul away the debris, rake out the yard, and clear the sidewalk and street.

Step :Insurance Documentation

We photograph and measure everything and send the file to you and your adjuster, and our arborist notes also help with the town's paperwork when a removal falls under the tree ordinance.

Common Tree Challenges in Westfield

Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.

Pin Oak

Very common in Westfield's older neighborhoods; dense crowns catch wind and wet snow, and dead lower limbs drop

Northern Red Oak

Big shade trees with long horizontal limbs over roofs; uproot whole when the ground is saturated

Norway Maple

Planted along many older streets; tight branch unions split, and girdling roots weaken the base

Sugar Maple

Older trees can decay at the trunk union while still looking healthy, then fail in a summer storm

London Plane / Sycamore

Large street and park trees; heavy limbs fail, and anthracnose and canker weaken the crown

Westfield Tree Regulations

Westfield's Tree Preservation Ordinance applies to shade, ornamental, and evergreen trees on both public and private property, and the 2024 amendments added notice to neighboring owners for removal applications. A tree that has already fallen, or one that is an immediate hazard to people or a building, is a different situation from a planned removal, but the town may still want to know about it. We make the property safe first and give you the documentation the town will ask for.

Town trees along the street are the Town of Westfield's to handle. New Jersey also requires tree care companies to be licensed through the NJ Board of Tree Experts and to work under a Licensed Tree Expert or Licensed Tree Care Operator. Ask for the license number before anyone starts cutting.

Frequently Asked Questions: Westfield Tree Emergencies

Do I need a permit to remove a storm-damaged tree in Westfield?

A tree that is already down or an immediate hazard can be made safe right away. Planned removals of healthy trees can fall under Westfield's Tree Preservation Ordinance, which covers private property too. We make the site safe, document why the work couldn't wait, and point you to what the town needs afterward.

Can you get a fallen tree out of a Westfield backyard with no access?

Yes. That's a common Westfield job. We carry or lower the wood out in small pieces, or lift it over the house to the street by crane, so nothing has to be dragged across the lawn, patio, or garden beds.

A town tree fell on my property. Who removes it?

Trees in the right-of-way are the Town of Westfield's, so report it to the town. If it's on your house and creating an immediate hazard, call us too. We can coordinate with the town on getting it off the structure and document the damage for your insurer.

Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal in Westfield?

Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies respond when a tree damages an insured structure like a house, garage, or fence, and treat a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything differently. A tree on a car is usually a matter for the auto policy. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes.

What should I do if a tree is on a power line in Westfield?

Treat every downed line as live. Stay well back, keep kids and pets away, and don't touch cars or fences the wires are resting on. Report it to PSE&G. Once the utility has made the line safe, our crew can remove the tree.

Do you cover Cranford, Scotch Plains, and the rest of Union County?

Yes. Along with every Westfield neighborhood, we work in Cranford, Garwood, Scotch Plains, Fanwood, Mountainside, Clark, and Springfield. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour.
