Towson's older neighborhoods grew up under a canopy that is now a century old.

Towson is the seat of Baltimore County and its busiest suburb, but most of the people who call us live in the neighborhoods around the center. Rodgers Forge is rows of brick townhouses with shared back alleys and big street trees out front. Stoneleigh, Anneslie, West Towson, Wiltondale, and Idlewylde are detached houses on modest lots under tall oaks and tulip poplars. Ruxton and Riderwood, to the west, are larger wooded lots on rolling ground. In all of them, the trees are taller than the houses and most of the power still runs overhead.

Central Maryland storms do the damage. The derecho of June 29, 2012 knocked out power to a large share of BGE customers in the Baltimore region and dropped big trees across Towson streets. Hurricane Isabel in September 2003 knocked out service to roughly 650,000 BGE customers at its peak, much of it from trees falling out of saturated ground, and Sandy in 2012 did the same on a smaller scale.

The National Weather Service office in Sterling, Virginia (LWX) issues the Severe Thunderstorm and High Wind Warnings for Baltimore County. Summer storm lines, heavy wet snow, and the occasional ice storm all find the weak unions and decayed roots in Towson's oldest trees.

Field insight:

In Rodgers Forge, the challenge is that the tree is out front and the only other access is a narrow rear alley, with townhouses attached on both sides. In Ruxton and West Towson it's the opposite: room to work but a very large oak or poplar on a slope. Either way we plan every cut around where the wood can go, and we rig it down instead of dropping it.

Our Towson Emergency Response Process

Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Towson property safe again.

Our Process

How We Handle Your Tree Emergency

Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency

Step :Emergency Call

Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your Towson address, what the tree hit, whether it's blocking the street or alley, and whether wires are involved.

Step :Dispatch

We don't climb or run cranes in damaging winds. Crews move once gusts drop to safe levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.

Step :Safety Assessment

A certified arborist checks the break, the lean, hung limbs, wire contact, and where each piece can come down between attached or close-set houses.

Step :Controlled Removal

The tree comes off the roof, porch, or car in small rigged sections, lowered into the street, yard, or alley rather than dropped onto the house.

Step :Property Protection

Spotters, mats, and controlled lowering protect neighboring townhouses, porches, fences, sidewalks, and parked cars that couldn't be moved.

Step :Complete Cleanup

We chip, buck, and haul away the debris and clear the sidewalk, street, and alley, following Baltimore County yard-waste guidance.

Step :Insurance Documentation

We photograph and measure everything before and during removal and send the file to you and your adjuster, which helps when a tree damaged more than one attached home.

Common Tree Challenges in Towson

Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.

Tulip Poplar

Very tall in Towson yards and the wooded lots of Ruxton; brittle wood snaps or uproots in thunderstorm gusts

Northern Red Oak

Large, old shade trees over Stoneleigh and West Towson; hidden root and trunk decay shows up as a storm failure

Pin Oak

Common older street and yard tree; heavy lower limbs and poor soil conditions lead to limb drop and decline

Silver Maple

Older plantings with weak, included unions that split in wind and wet snow onto houses and cars

Callery (Bradford) Pear

Planted widely in newer streetscapes; tight forks split apart in wind and ice, often in half

Towson & Baltimore County Tree Regulations

Towson is unincorporated, so local rules come from Baltimore County. Trees in the public right-of-way are covered by the Maryland Roadside Tree Law, administered by the DNR Forest Service, which requires a permit before work on roadside trees. A fallen tree that came out of the right-of-way should also be reported to the county. We'll tell you when the state or county needs to be involved.

Baltimore County's forest conservation rules mainly apply to land development, not to clearing storm damage from a homeowner's lot. Rodgers Forge and some other Towson communities have neighborhood covenants or associations with their own expectations for trees and alleys, so we'll ask before any replanting or non-emergency removal.

Helpful links: Maryland DNR Forest Service, the Baltimore County portal, and the ISA arborist resource University of Maryland Extension — Baltimore County.

Frequently Asked Questions: Towson Tree Emergencies

A street tree fell on my townhouse in Rodgers Forge. Who removes it?

A tree in the public right-of-way should be reported to Baltimore County, and roadside trees are covered by the Maryland Roadside Tree Law. If it's on your house and creating an immediate hazard, call us too. We can get it off the structure safely, coordinate on the part in the right-of-way, and document the damage for your insurer.

Can you remove a tree from a backyard that only has alley access?

Yes. Many Towson townhouses only have a narrow rear alley. We bring in compact equipment, rig the tree down in short sections, and carry or lower the wood out through the alley or over the house to the street when that's safer.

Why do Towson's older trees fail in storms like Isabel and the 2012 derecho?

Most of the big oaks, poplars, and maples in Towson's neighborhoods are decades old, and many have hidden root or trunk decay. Isabel in 2003 soaked the ground before the wind arrived, and the June 2012 derecho hit with sudden, intense gusts. Either combination brings down the largest, oldest trees first.

Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal in Towson?

Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies respond when a tree damages an insured structure like a house, garage, or fence, and treat a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything differently. A tree on a car is usually a matter for the auto policy. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes to support your claim.

What should I do if a tree is on a power line in Towson?

Treat every downed line as live. Stay well back, keep kids and pets away, and don't touch cars or fences the wires are resting on. Report it to BGE. Once the utility has made the line safe, our crew can remove the tree.

Which Towson neighborhoods do you cover?

All of them: Rodgers Forge, Stoneleigh, Anneslie, West Towson, Wiltondale, Idlewylde, and Towson Manor Village, plus Ruxton, Riderwood, Lutherville, Timonium, Loch Raven Village, Parkville, and Cockeysville. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour.
