Kent Island sits low in the middle of the Bay, open to wind from every direction.
Kent Island is the first landfall on the Eastern Shore at the end of the Bay Bridge, and most of it is only a few feet above the water. Stevensville, Chester, and the waterfront communities around Love Point, Matapeake, Bay City, and Romancoke are a mix of older cottages, newer subdivisions, and homes on canals and creeks, many shaded by tall loblolly pines, oaks, and maples. Grasonville and Kent Narrows sit just across the narrows on the mainland side.
With open Bay on the west and the Chester River and Eastern Bay to the east, the island takes storms without much shelter. Hurricane Isabel in September 2003 pushed a record surge up the Chesapeake and flooded low parts of the island, and saturated ground under its winds brought trees down. The derecho of June 29, 2012 and Sandy in 2012 hit the region as well. On July 24, 2017, a waterspout came ashore south of the Bay Bridge as an EF-2 tornado, with winds estimated at 125 mph, and tore through the Bay City area toward Stevensville.
The National Weather Service office in Mount Holly, New Jersey (PHI) issues the warnings for Queen Anne's County. Northeasters, summer storm lines crossing the Bay, and tropical systems are what usually bring the calls.
Field insight:
Kent Island ground is usually wet, and after a storm it can be soaked to the surface. A loblolly pine that uproots on a canal lot often takes a big plate of soil with it and leaves the trees around it leaning. We bring equipment in on mats, keep heavy loads away from bulkheads and septic systems, and check every neighboring pine before we leave.

Common Tree Emergencies We Handle in Kent Island
Facing one of these right now? Go straight to the situation — we respond 24/7:
Our Kent Island Emergency Response Process
Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Kent Island property safe again.
How We Handle Your Tree Emergency
Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency
Step :Emergency Call
Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your Kent Island address, what the tree hit, whether your road is flooded or blocked, and whether wires are involved.
Step :Dispatch
We don't climb or run cranes in damaging winds. Crews move once gusts drop to safe levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.
Step :Safety Assessment
A certified arborist checks the break, the lean, the root plate, hung limbs, wire contact, and how close the work is to tidal water.
Step :Controlled Removal
The tree comes off the roof, deck, or car in rigged sections or crane picks, lowered onto the lot instead of toward the house or the water.
Step :Property Protection
Ground mats, spotters, and controlled lowering protect lawns, bulkheads, docks, septic systems, and the neighbor's house.
Step :Complete Cleanup
We chip, buck, and haul away the debris or leave cut wood where you want it, following Queen Anne's County guidance.
Step :Insurance Documentation
We photograph and measure everything before and during removal and send the file to you and your adjuster, including damage to docks, sheds, and fences.
Common Tree Challenges in Kent Island
Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.
Loblolly Pine
The dominant tall tree on Kent Island; shallow roots in wet, sandy soil uproot or snap in northeasters and tropical storms
Red Maple
Common in low, wet ground; weak forks split when storms hit saturated soil
Willow Oak
Planted in yards and subdivisions; dense crowns catch wind and ice and shed heavy limbs
Black Cherry
Grows up along lot edges and hedgerows; brittle limbs and trunk decay lead to breakage in storms
Eastern Red Cedar
Common near the shore; tolerates salt but older trees with shallow roots topple in soaked ground
Kent Island & Chesapeake Bay Critical Area Tree Regulations
Most of Kent Island lies within the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area, the land within 1,000 feet of tidal water and tidal wetlands. Tree removal there is regulated by Queen Anne's County under Maryland's Critical Area law, with the strictest rules in the shoreline buffer. Removals can require approval and replanting. Emergency removal of trees that are down or an immediate hazard is handled differently, and we'll tell you what the county needs to hear.
Trees along public roads are covered by the Maryland Roadside Tree Law, administered by the DNR Forest Service, which requires a permit before work on roadside trees. A fallen tree from the right-of-way should be reported to Queen Anne's County, or to the State Highway Administration on state roads like MD 18. We'll check which applies before any non-emergency work.

Frequently Asked Questions: Kent Island Tree Emergencies
Can you get to Kent Island after a storm if the Bay Bridge is closed?
The Bay Bridge can close or restrict traffic in high winds, and crews don't climb or run cranes in damaging winds anyway. We move once winds drop to safe levels and routes are open. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour and we'll tell you honestly when a crew can reach you.
Do I need Critical Area approval to remove a storm-damaged tree on Kent Island?
A tree already down on a house or blocking access is an emergency and can be removed. Planned removal of a tree within the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area, especially the shoreline buffer, usually needs Queen Anne's County approval and may require replanting. We'll help you understand what's required before any work that isn't an emergency.
Why do so many pines uproot on Kent Island?
Kent Island soils are low, sandy, and often wet, and loblolly pines there tend to root shallowly. When a storm saturates the ground and the wind comes across open water, a tall pine can lift its whole root plate. Neighboring pines that lost root support are worth checking after one goes over.
Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal on Kent Island?
Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies respond when a tree damages an insured structure like a house, garage, or fence, and treat a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything differently. A tree on a car is usually a matter for the auto policy, and docks may be covered differently. Check with your carrier. We document the scene to support your claim.
What should I do if a tree is on a power line on Kent Island?
Treat every downed line as live. Stay well back, keep kids and pets away, and don't touch cars or fences the wires are resting on. Report it to the electric utility on your bill, Delmarva Power or Choptank Electric Cooperative, both of which serve parts of Queen Anne's County. Once the line is safe, our crew can remove the tree.
Which parts of Kent Island and Queen Anne's County do you cover?
All of Kent Island, including Stevensville, Chester, Love Point, Matapeake, Bay City, Romancoke, and Dominion, plus Kent Narrows, Grasonville, Prospect Bay, Queenstown, Centreville, Church Hill, and Wye Mills. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour.
