Bethesda's big old oaks are the reason people buy here, and the reason the derecho hurt so much.
Most of Bethesda and Chevy Chase was built out between the 1910s and the 1950s, and the trees went in with the houses. Streets in Edgemoor, Kenwood, Bradley Hills, Greenwich Forest, and Chevy Chase are now arched over by oaks, tulip poplars, and maples that are 80 to 100 feet tall, standing over brick colonials, slate roofs, and the overhead Pepco lines that still run along most residential blocks. When one of those trees fails, it is big enough to reach the house, the street, and the neighbor's yard at once.
The storm that defined that risk was the derecho of June 29, 2012. It crossed the Washington region on a hot Friday night with gusts near 70 mph, and Montgomery County was among the hardest-hit places. Hundreds of thousands of Pepco customers lost power, many for close to a week, and Bethesda streets were blocked by whole oaks and poplars lying across them. Hurricane Isabel in 2003 and Sandy in 2012 did similar damage on a smaller scale, mostly by toppling trees out of saturated ground.
Summer thunderstorm lines are the more routine threat. The National Weather Service office in Sterling, Virginia (LWX) issues Severe Thunderstorm Warnings for Montgomery County most summers, and the trees that come down are usually the mature canopy trees over older lots, not the young street plantings.
Field insight:
A typical Bethesda call is a large oak or tulip poplar split at a union or uprooted onto a two-story house, with the crown tangled in the service drop and a car in the driveway underneath. Lots are close enough that there's rarely room to drop wood, so we rig it down in sections, often with a crane set in the street, and work around slate and copper that doesn't tolerate a dropped limb.

Bethesda response: large oak rigged off a colonial roof in sections over a tight lot

Common Tree Emergencies We Handle in Bethesda
Facing one of these right now? Go straight to the situation — we respond 24/7:
Our Bethesda Emergency Response Process
Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Bethesda property safe again.
How We Handle Your Tree Emergency
Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency
Step :Emergency Call
Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your Bethesda or Chevy Chase address, what the tree hit, whether it's blocking the street, and whether wires are involved.
Step :Dispatch
We don't climb or run cranes in damaging winds. Crews move once gusts drop to safe levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.
Step :Safety Assessment
A certified arborist checks the break, the lean, hung limbs, wire contact, and where a crane or rigging can work on a close-set Bethesda lot.
Step :Controlled Removal
The tree comes off the roof, porch, or car in rigged sections or crane picks, lowered into the street or driveway instead of dropped onto the house.
Step :Property Protection
Spotters, ground mats, and controlled lowering protect slate roofs, brick walks, patios, fences, and the neighbor's house next door.
Step :Complete Cleanup
We chip, buck, and haul away the debris and clear the sidewalk and street, following Montgomery County yard-waste guidance.
Step :Insurance Documentation
We photograph and measure everything before and during removal and send the file to you and your adjuster, which helps when one tree damaged a house, a car, and a fence.
Common Tree Challenges in Bethesda
Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.
Willow Oak
A common Montgomery County street tree; big, dense crowns catch wind and ice and shed heavy limbs over streets and roofs
Tulip Poplar
Very tall and fast-growing in Bethesda yards; brittle wood and a high crown make it a frequent thunderstorm and derecho failure
Northern Red Oak
Large mature yard trees over older homes; root and trunk decay often hides until a storm uproots or snaps one
Silver Maple
Older plantings with weak, included unions that split apart in wind and drop onto houses and cars
White Ash
Emerald ash borer has killed most untreated ash in Maryland; dead ash become brittle and fail without warning
Bethesda & Chevy Chase Tree Regulations
Trees in the public right-of-way are protected twice in Bethesda. The Maryland Roadside Tree Law, administered by the DNR Forest Service, requires a permit before work on roadside trees, and Montgomery County's own Roadside Tree Protection law adds county requirements for trees along county roads. Street trees are maintained by the Montgomery County Department of Transportation, so a fallen street tree should be reported to the county. Hazard and storm-damage work is treated differently from routine removal, and we'll tell you when a permit or the county needs to be involved.
Several incorporated communities around Bethesda, including the Town of Chevy Chase, have their own tree rules on top of the county's, and the Town of Chevy Chase requires a permit to remove larger trees on private property, with a different process for trees that are dead, dying, or hazardous. If your house is inside one of these municipalities, we'll check its rules before any non-emergency removal.

Frequently Asked Questions: Bethesda Tree Emergencies
A county street tree fell on my house in Bethesda. Who removes it?
Trees in the public right-of-way are maintained by the Montgomery County Department of Transportation, and you should report a fallen street tree to the county through MC311. If it's on your house and creating an immediate hazard, call us too. We can get it off the structure safely, coordinate with the county on the part in the right-of-way, and document the damage for your insurer.
Do I need a permit to remove a storm-damaged tree in Chevy Chase?
It depends on where you live. The Town of Chevy Chase and some other incorporated communities have their own tree permit rules, with separate handling for dead, dying, or hazardous trees, and roadside trees fall under state and county law. A tree already down on a house is an emergency, but we'll confirm what your municipality requires before any removal that isn't.
Why did so many Bethesda trees come down in the 2012 derecho?
The June 29, 2012 derecho brought gusts near 70 mph through Montgomery County with little warning, and Bethesda's canopy is dominated by very tall, mature oaks and tulip poplars. Trees that size catch a lot of wind, and many had hidden decay at the roots or unions. Large, old trees over close-set houses are the ones worth having an arborist look at before storm season.
Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal in Bethesda?
Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies respond when a tree damages an insured structure like a house, garage, or fence, and treat a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything differently. A tree on a car is usually a matter for the auto policy. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes to support your claim.
What should I do if a tree is on a power line in Bethesda?
Treat every downed line as live. Stay well back, keep kids and pets away, and don't touch cars or fences the wires are resting on. Report it to Pepco. Once the utility has made the line safe, our crew can remove the tree.
Which Bethesda and Chevy Chase neighborhoods do you cover?
All of them: Downtown Bethesda, Edgemoor, Kenwood, Bradley Hills, Battery Park, Greenwich Forest, Wyngate, Burning Tree, Sumner, and Westmoreland Hills, plus Chevy Chase, Chevy Chase Village, Somerset, North Bethesda, Glen Echo, and Kensington. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour.
