Newark's big trees grew up alongside the university, and now they stand over almost everything.

Newark is a college town with an old canopy. The streets around Main Street and the University of Delaware campus are lined with tall oaks, tulip poplars, and maples planted generations ago, and they shade older homes, student rentals, and cars parked tight along the curb. Out in neighborhoods like Fairfield, College Park, and Oaklands, mid-century houses sit on lots where the shade trees are now taller than the roofs. When a big limb lets go here, it usually comes down on a house, a car, or a line.

The city sits on the fall line, where the rolling Piedmont meets the flat Coastal Plain, and White Clay Creek and the Christina Creek wind through it. Soaked bottomland along those creeks loosens root plates in long rains, and the wooded edges of White Clay Creek State Park and the Iron Hill area put a lot of mature trees right up against homes. Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and the remnants of Ida in 2021 both brought heavy rain and wind across New Castle County.

The most destructive recent event came from Tropical Storm Isaias on August 4, 2020. Its record-setting EF2 tornado tracked about 35 miles from Dover into New Castle County, crossed the C&D Canal near Summit Bridge, ran past Lums Pond, and brought down hundreds of trees in Brennan Estates off Route 896 south of Newark before lifting near the Maryland line, according to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly.

Field insight:

A lot of Newark calls come from rental streets near campus, where a limb is resting on a porch roof and there are four or five cars parked under the rest of the tree. Out in the developments toward Pike Creek and Glasgow, it's more often a whole tulip poplar or oak that tipped out of a wooded back line onto a deck or roof. Either way, the first job is figuring out what's holding the tree up before anyone cuts.

Our Newark Emergency Response Process

Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Newark property safe again.

Our Process

How We Handle Your Tree Emergency

Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency

Step :Emergency Call

Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your Newark address, what the tree hit, whether cars or wires are involved, and whether anyone can't get out.

Step :Dispatch

We don't climb or run cranes in damaging winds. Crews move once gusts drop to safe levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.

Step :Safety Assessment

A certified arborist checks the break, the lean, hung limbs, root-plate lift, and any contact with City of Newark or Delmarva Power lines before the first cut.

Step :Controlled Removal

The tree comes off the roof, porch, or car in rigged sections, lowered into whatever open space the lot or street allows.

Step :Property Protection

Spotters, mats, and controlled lowering protect neighboring homes, fences, decks, lawns, and parked cars that couldn't be moved.

Step :Complete Cleanup

We chip, buck, and haul away the debris and clear the driveway, sidewalk, and street, following City of Newark and New Castle County disposal guidance.

Step :Insurance Documentation

We photograph and measure everything before and during removal and send the file to you and your adjuster, which helps when a tree hit a rental, a neighbor's house, or several cars.

Common Tree Challenges in Newark

Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.

Tulip Poplar

One of the tallest trees in Newark yards and woodlots; brittle upper limbs snap in wind and whole trees tip from wet ground

Red & Pin Oak

Big street and campus-area shade trees; heavy limbs fail at weak unions and drop onto roofs and parked cars

Red Maple

Common in neighborhood yards; weak wood sheds large limbs once the soil is soaked

American Beech

Older trees along White Clay Creek and wooded lot lines; shallow roots fail in saturated bottomland

Green & White Ash

Emerald ash borer has killed many ash trees in Delaware, and dead ash turns brittle and breaks without warning

Newark Tree Regulations

Inside city limits, trees along streets and on public land are the City of Newark's responsibility, and work on them goes through the city. Outside city limits, in areas like Pike Creek, Glasgow, and Bear, New Castle County's rules apply, and many subdivisions also have homeowners association rules for open space. Trees on University of Delaware property are handled by the university. We'll tell you whose tree it is and who needs to be involved.

Emergency removal of a tree that's down or posing an immediate hazard on private property is generally allowed right away. Work near streams and wetlands along White Clay Creek and the Christina Creek can involve DNREC, Delaware's environmental agency, and we flag that before we start.

Frequently Asked Questions: Newark Tree Emergencies

Who do I call about a downed line in Newark, City of Newark Electric or Delmarva Power?

It depends on where you are. The City of Newark runs its own electric department for most homes and businesses inside city limits, and you can report outages and emergencies to the city any hour. Areas outside the city, such as Pike Creek, Glasgow, and Bear, are generally served by Delmarva Power. Check your electric bill if you're not sure. Either way, treat every downed line as live and stay well back.

A tree fell on my rental near the University of Delaware. Who handles it?

The property owner or landlord is usually responsible for the tree and the damage, and tenants should let them know right away. If the tree is on the house or blocking an exit, call us too. We can make the scene safe, remove the tree, and send photos and notes to the owner and their insurer.

Was Newark affected by the 2020 Isaias tornado?

The record-length EF2 tornado from Tropical Storm Isaias on August 4, 2020 crossed southern New Castle County. The National Weather Service found hundreds of trees down or uprooted in Brennan Estates off Route 896 south of Newark, along with damage near Summit Bridge and Lums Pond. It's a reminder that wooded developments around Newark can take serious tree damage even when the storm isn't a hurricane.

Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal in Newark, DE?

Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies respond when a tree damages an insured structure like a house, garage, or fence, and treat a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything differently. A tree on a car is usually a matter for the auto policy. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes to support your claim.

Can you remove a tree that fell from White Clay Creek State Park or a wooded open space onto my house?

Yes. We'll remove whatever is on your home and property. Trees that fall from state park land or HOA open space can raise questions about who owns the rest of the tree, so we document where it came from and can coordinate with the landowner on the part that's still standing.

Which areas around Newark do you cover?

All of Newark, including Downtown and Main Street, the streets around the University of Delaware, Fairfield, College Park, Oaklands, and Iron Hill. We also work in Pike Creek, Ogletown, Brookside, Glasgow, Bear, and Christiana. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour.
