Guilford is two different tree problems: the shoreline and the woods up north.

Guilford's center grew up around the town Green, with some of the oldest houses in Connecticut, including the Henry Whitfield House, under big old maples and oaks. South of the center, shoreline neighborhoods like Sachem's Head, Leetes Island, Shell Beach, and Indian Cove sit on rocky points and salt marsh along Long Island Sound, where trees take the wind straight off the water. North of Interstate 95 the town turns rural and wooded, and North Guilford and the area around Lake Quonnipaug have homes on large lots with long drives and tall oaks and hemlocks overhead.

Shoreline storms hit Guilford from both directions. Tropical Storm Irene in 2011 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012 pushed water and wind into the low shoreline neighborhoods, and the October 2011 nor'easter brought down trees inland with heavy snow on full leaves. Tropical Storm Isaias on August 4, 2020 knocked out power to thousands of Guilford homes, with similar damage in Madison and Branford.

Saturated ground is what turns a strong wind into an uprooted tree here, especially near the marshes and the West and East rivers. The National Weather Service New York office in Upton (OKX) covers Guilford and the rest of New Haven County, and issues its coastal, tropical, and high wind warnings.

Field insight:

On the shoreline, Guilford calls are usually a tree on a house on a small lot, close to the neighbors, with marsh or ledge where you'd want to put equipment. Up in North Guilford it's the opposite: a big oak or hemlock down across a long wooded drive with plenty of room but a long way to carry everything out. We plan each one for what's actually there.

Our Guilford Emergency Response Process

Clear steps. Fast action. Zero guesswork. Here's how we get your Guilford property safe again.

Our Process

How We Handle Your Tree Emergency

Our streamlined process ensures quick response and efficient resolution of your tree emergency

Step :Emergency Call

Call (866) 320-7003 any hour. A live person takes your Guilford address, what the tree hit, whether wires are down, and whether roads in are flooded or blocked.

Step :Dispatch

We don't climb or run cranes in damaging winds. Crews move once gusts drop to safe levels, and trees on occupied homes and blocked exits come first.

Step :Safety Assessment

A certified arborist checks the break, root-plate lift in wet soil, hung limbs, nearby damaged trees, and any contact with Eversource lines.

Step :Controlled Removal

The tree comes off the house, car, or drive in rigged sections, lowered under control instead of cut where it lies.

Step :Property Protection

Mats, spotters, and controlled lowering protect roofs, stone walls, septic systems, docks, and lawns near the marsh.

Step :Complete Cleanup

We chip, buck, and haul away the debris, or cut and stack the wood on the property, following Town of Guilford disposal guidance.

Step :Insurance Documentation

We photograph and measure everything before and during removal and send the file to you and your adjuster.

Common Tree Challenges in Guilford

Every species fails its own way under load. Knowing those patterns lets us clear the hazard without starting a new one.

Red, White & Black Oak

The big trees in town and up in North Guilford; heavy limbs fail in tropical-storm wind, and whole trees uproot in soaked ground

Sugar & Norway Maple

Old trees around the Green and along village streets; decayed unions split and drop limbs on houses, cars, and wires

Eastern Hemlock

Common in North Guilford's wooded areas; hemlock woolly adelgid has weakened many, and declining trees shed limbs

Eastern Red Cedar

Common along the shoreline and marsh edges; dense crowns catch wind and salt spray, and shallow roots let go in wet soil

White Ash

Emerald ash borer is established in Connecticut; dead ash turn brittle and unpredictable to fell

Guilford Tree Regulations

Under Connecticut General Statutes Section 23-59, Guilford's tree warden has care and control of trees that stand wholly or partly within a public road or town grounds, even when part of the tree is on private land. Unless a tree is an immediate public hazard, the warden must post notice at least ten days before removal, and objections go to a public hearing. Trees along state roads like Route 1 and Route 77 are under the state Department of Transportation.

Work near tidal wetlands and along the shore at Sachem's Head, Leetes Island, and the town's salt marshes can involve CT DEEP, and work near inland wetlands and watercourses falls under Guilford's inland wetlands review. Emergency hazard removal is usually allowed, though a notification may be needed. We flag that before we start.

Frequently Asked Questions: Guilford Tree Emergencies

Who is the electric utility in Guilford?

Guilford is served by Eversource, as are Madison and Branford. Neighboring North Branford is served by United Illuminating. If a tree is on a line, stay well back, treat the line as live, and report it to the utility that sends your bill. Once the line is safe, our crew removes the tree.

Can you remove a tree from a shoreline house at Sachem's Head or Leetes Island?

Yes. Shoreline lots in Guilford are often small, rocky, or bordered by marsh, so we rig the tree off the house in sections and lower it into whatever space is available instead of bringing heavy equipment onto soft ground. If the work touches tidal wetlands, we'll flag any state rules first.

A tree is down across my long driveway in North Guilford. Can you clear it?

Yes. If you can't get out, tell us when you call, because a blocked exit moves you up the list. We cut a safe path first so you and emergency vehicles can get through, then finish the removal and cleanup.

A roadside tree fell on my property in Guilford. Is it the town's?

It may be. Trees standing wholly or partly within a town road are under the tree warden's control, and trees along state roads like Route 1 and Route 77 are the state's. Report it. If it's on your house and creating an immediate hazard, call us too, and we'll coordinate.

Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal in Guilford?

Coverage depends on your policy. Many policies respond when a tree damages an insured structure like a house, garage, or fence, and treat a tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything differently. Some shoreline policies also carry a separate hurricane or named-storm deductible. Check with your carrier. We document the scene with photos, measurements, and arborist notes to support your claim.

Which areas do you cover around Guilford?

All of Guilford: the Green and Guilford Center, Sachem's Head, Leetes Island, Shell Beach, Indian Cove, Nut Plains, Guilford Lakes, and North Guilford. We also work in Madison, Branford, North Branford, and Durham. Call (866) 320-7003 any hour.
